FAREWELL SOCIAL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) April 8At the C.E.M.S. Club last evening a large number of townspeople assembled to bid farewell to Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Bennett, who are leaving the district. The' president of the club (Mr. T. C. Stauners) expressed the general regret of the club at losing such a sterling worker as Mr- Bennett, who had been associated with the club since its inception. It was through his energy and Mr. Wilkinson’s kindly donation of the ground that this splendid institution had grown to what it is to-day. Mr. Stanners then presented Mr. and Mrs. Bennett with a silver cake stand and flower stand as a small token of esteem and appreciation of the work done by both for the club. The Mayor (Mr. G. W. Tayler), on behalf of the townspeople, presented Mr. Bennett with an illuminated address signed by a number of townspeople, as a mark of the esteem in which he was held. The Church of England (Rev- J. G. Castle) also presented Mr. and Mrs. Bennett with a small gift in appreciation of the good work done by both for the church. He also handed little Peggy Northover a present. Mr. Bennett thanked the club, citizens and church members for their kind wishes and presents. He said he would always look back on Eltham with pleasure and loving memories. The work he had done for the club, citizens and church had been a pleasure to him. As stationmaster he had found that fair treatment to the public would always be recognised. Mr. O. Hawken, M.P-, also regretted Mr. Bennett’s retirement, and hoped both he and Mrs. Bennett would be spared many years. During the evening a splendid musical programme was given, those contributing being Misses Turnbull and Nuttall (pianoforte duet), Mesdames Drayton, Wylds and Hemingway, Messrs. Johnson, Silver and Thorpe, and Glee Club, songs. The evening closed with the National Anthem, and an excellent supper was then partaken o£
