HIBERNIAN SPORTS.

RECORD MEETING AT MANAIA. EXCELLENT FOOTBALL CONTESTS. The Manaia Hibernian Sports Club was favored with fine weather for their annual sports meeting at the Manaia Domain on Saturday, and there was a record attendance of the public, who’ thoroughly enjoyed the varied programme. There was not one dull moment. The officials had airanged a varied programme of athletic, horse and Highland events, as well as a football tournament, so that there was no time for delays, and it speaks well for the excellent organisation that everything passed off smoothly, and the events were finished well up to time. There were big fields In all the events, and finishes were very close in the athletic events. The judges —Messrs. J. S. McKay, E. T. Burke, A. H. Christie, N. C. Innes, J. McCarthy, and T. McPhillips—had a busy time, and they gave their decisions without a mistake, although the handicapper (Mr. C. A. Burke) had well gauged the merits of his men. Messrs. J. O’Dea and J. A. Hansen dispatched their fields well, and Messrs. W. Slattery and P. F. acted, as time-keepers. The horse events were held, in A separare portion of the Domain, Messrs. H. Washer and Alex. McCracken being the judges, and some good jumping was witnessed.-. The Highland dancing was particularly good. The judge (Mr. J. Grant) stated that... the dancing was extraordinarily good, the entries also being large. Pipe-Major Hamilton provided the music. Exhibitions by Messrs. D. Ross (Opunake) and E. Massey were also given. Ten teams competed in the footoai! seven-aside tournament. This attracted mu ch attention, and some excellent games were witnessed, play being of a high standard and auguring well for the coming season.

The children were well entertained, a committee comprising Messrs. E. Long, A. G. Bennett, and J. Taylor looking after their interests. The Manaia Band, under Bandmaster Cosgrove, provided a very enjoyable programme of music, whilst the catering was first-class, being in the hands of a strong committee of ladles, with Mrs. Lander at the head. The secretarial duties were in tte hands of Messrs. W. J. Badley and C. A. Burke, and they are to be congratulated on their splendid work. The committee' and all the officials have every cause to feel gratified at the success achieved. Detailed results are : ATHLETIC EVENTS. Maiden Race, 100 yards.—First heat: N. C. O’Brien, A. Lusk, R. Lusk, Penniall) defeated Eltham (Carlson, Cargo, Hickey, Evans, Greig, McCracken, and Peebles) by 8 points to nil. In the first spell Gilhooley secured, and running half the length of the field, scored, Lusk converting. Later O’Rourke got over from a scrambling rust. Mr. Fearon refereed. Opunake A (Mcßeynolds, Bowman, Brophy, Duffy, Ifwerson (2), Rye), proved too good for Waimate A (Birchall, Atkinson, Taylor, Evans, Purvis, McKay (2), defeating them by 11 points to nil. Opunake backs proved too clever. Ifwerson Bros., wifth som pree<y play, passed the ball to Duffy, who shot it wide across to Rye, and the latter galloped over, doing the trick again a couple of minutes later. In the second spell a pretty bout of passing between Brophy, Duffy and K. Ifwerson saw the latter score. He also converted one try, making the score Opunake 11, Waimate nil. Mr. A. H. Guy refereed. Kaponga Hockey (Humphries, Thoumlne, Briggs, Binnie, Priest, Guy and Nicholl) beat Kaponga (Malone, Jones, M. Lynskey, Hammersley, McCarthy, Dymock, Stewart) by 9 points to 6. After a very even game, in which each side In turn had the upper hand. Priest scored for Hockey. Then Dymock evened up. Next Malone placed Kaponga in the lead by landing a goal from a penalty. Briggs, however, scored a couple of good tries. In one instance running almost the length of the field. Mr. E. Burke refereed. Second Round. Clifton beat Hawera after a fast and open game by 8 points to nil. Clifton early pressed, and Hickey, side-stepping nicely, passed to Jones, who was collared. A moment later Tan cred handed to Hickey, who scored in the corner. Roes failed to goal. Hawera attacked, but Ross saved and set bis meui moving. Fuller picked up and passed to Tay-/ lor, who scored. Ross goaled. Hawera then pressed, and Robertson was nearly over, but hung on too long. In the concluding stages Clifton again attacked. Mr. Fearon refereed. Opunake A easily defeated Opunake B by 15 points to nil. R. Ifwerson scored twice and K. Ifwerson once, converting the three tries. Mr. A. H. Guy refereed. Kaponga Hockey had a bye. Semi-final. Clifton beat Kaponga Hockey by 6 points to 3 after a great struggle. Early in the game Hockey, who were very fit, pressed, and Nlooll scored. Then play rushed to the other end, where Jones got over. Hockey again pressed and forced their opponents, hut Clifton then asserted their superiority, and a nice passing hout between Fryday and Jones saw the latter again score. Mr. Burke refereed. The Final. The final between Clifton and Opunake provided a great “go,” play being fast and open and up and down the field. Old players consider it one of the best seven-aside matches they have witnessed, as each side made the gaune open. Clifton scored first, a» the outcome of a passing bout, Jones getting over. The try was not converted, rlay continued tip and down field, neither side gaining the advantage until just on call of time, when Ifwerson, who had played a fine game, shot the ball out to Rye at half-way. The latter side-stepped Hickey and beat Jones, and run across at the corner and scored behind the posts. Ifwerson converted, and Opunake won the tournament by 5 to 3. Mr. E. Burke refereed.
