JEANNES’ FATE.
MERCY WOULD BE TREASON. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. Received April 7, 5.5 p.m. Brussels, April n. The Advocate-General has decided not to recommend Jeannes (the betrayer of Nurse Cavcll) for mercy, thus departing from the procedure in all death sentences in Belgium since 1865. Curiously, Belgium’s guillotine has not been used since 1861. It is stored at Mons, where Jeannes was sentenced. The Press is of opinion that it would be connivance at high treason to show mercy to Jeannes. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
