CANTERBURY MARKETS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last NightOats are firmer. Quotations for A grade Gartons are up to 2/9 to farmers. B's 2/5 to 2/6. There is not inuca business, but southern harvest reports land the absence of offers from farmers ore combining to strengthen the market. A slight demand for Algerians has developed, quotations being up to 2/3A at country stations. Shipments of barley are being made to 'England, a policy that has the virtue of common sense. It is believed it is in view of the stagnation of the local markets. Prices have been very irregular and over a wide range, and malsters seem disinclined to operate. It is being noted that they still hold a considerable carry-over stock from last season. The seed market is unaltered. It is understood there has been inquiry from abroad for crested dogstail, but Canterbury produces but little of this seed. The chaff market is showing signs o. a little life. Sales have been made at nearby stations up to £3 7s Gd., The movement is in sympathy with the better tone for oats, but what the value would be if extensive supplies came to hand it would be difficult to forecast. In the meantime there is an improved local demand.
Very heavy potato supplies have gone to Auckland during the week, and further substantial consignments are to follow within a few days. Reports generally are that favorable yields will be the rule when main crops’ digging commences in earnest after Easter. The damage from blight will be very small. Wellington has been a very small consumer of Canterbury potatoes so far this season, duo possibly to the Witirarapa and Southern Hawke’s Bay crop being much better than it -promised six weeks ago. Onions are worth £5 5s to farmers. The crop is light this year, although the quality is good. Peas are still a subject of inquiry from England, but the prices so far paid locally for partridge have eaten fhe margin, though export is still proceeding.
