THE INGLEWOOD COUNTY SQUABBLES.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —I am quite convinced now that any servant of the council must be an '■i>ut and out crawler to the chairman or he must lose his job. As one who pays about the largest amount of rates to the Inglewood County Council, I have occasion to see the work of the engineer, and to my mind there is 40 per cent, saved in the expenditure and much better work done although wages and teams have not fallen more than 10 per cent, than when the last two engineers handled the work. I know several besides myself who consider it would be a splendid thing for the ratepayers to have a change of chairman, as it appears to me that fion-e of the councillors haven’t a mipd of their own, and Mr. Corkill has a way of making them follow his way. It is a fact that Mr. Corkill has been trying to get some of the councillors against the engineer for a time, past now. Councillor Jones seconds the motion of Cr. Topping that the services of the engineer be dispersed with. I have heard Mr. Jones say the engineer was the best man the council ever had, although I don't think Cr. Jones knows anything about the business, unless Mr. Corkill suggests it. Cr. Jones makes one to agree. Cr. Topping is a man who has not the least knowledge of the supervision of labor. Who would expect him to? I have no weak spots for Mr. Climie, but it seems a pity that the ratepayers have to work so hard ■from ea£lv morning to late at night to pay their'heavy rates for the chairman to squabble with every good servant they get in the. Council. 1 am glad to see the older and more experienced members of the Council voted against the chairman. I know less has been taken from the crushers than the contractors got out from the river through the drays and lorries being overloaded. Surely it ,cuts both ways. The chairman says a man on the job said 366 yards were put on the Motukawa Road at £1 per yard. The engineer says the tally showed 600 yards put on and 43 chains were done at £317 6s sd, which is a little over 10s per yard. The ratepayers should call a meeting to retain the services of the engineer and ask the chairman to resign.—l am, A RATEPAYER. Inglewood, April 4.
