BRITISH POLITICS.
A SHAM MOTION. ■ RIDICULED BY CHAMBERLAIN. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received. April 6, 5.5 p.m, London, April 5. In. the House of Commons, Sir W. Joy naon -Hicks (Coalition Unionist) moved a motion that the lack of a definite and coherent principle in the policy of the Coalition Government can only •be remedied by a ministry of men united in political principle. A lively debate followed, the malcontents urging a return to party politics, and accusing the Government of incompetence and muddling. Mr. Chamberlain, replying, was received with prolonged cheers. He said that Sir W. Joynson-Hicks and his friends were laying down a sort of new Athanasian Creed, outside which no salvation was obtainable. They stood for perfect unity of thought in the counsels of the nation. There must be no corrupt co-operation—not’ even a chance ftf meeting in the division lobby. (Laughter). Mr. Chamberlain added that the motion was an utter sham. It was rejected by 288 votes to 95, —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
