ISOLATES ENGINEERS.
UNIONS BREAK AWAY. 1 SKILLED MEN’S POSITION. LOCK-OUT SUSPENDED. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received April 6, 5.5 p.m. London, April 5. The breakaway by the other unions from the engineers is regarded as almost equally important to the break-ing-up of the Triple Alliance. Labor circles condemn the isolation of the amalgamated engineers, which they attribute to Mr. Lloyd George’s manoeuvres. Skilled engineers fear that, when work is resumed, semi-skilled men fronA other unions will displace skilled engineers, making the ultimate reinstatement of the amalgamated men very difficult. Dr. Macnamara (Minister of Labor) announced in the House of Commons that negotiations between the employera and other unions Would commence on April 10, the lock-out meanwhile being suspended. He did not think a court of inquiry would be justified, in view of resumption of negotiations, the accepted basis for which implied the management’s right to give instructions pending negotiations, except where modifications were mutually agreed upon.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. POSITION OF BOILER-MAKERS. Received April 6, 5.5 p.m. London, April 5. Mr. Hill, secretary of the boilermakers, has advised the members of unions which agreed to negotiate not to cease work, pointing out that the decisions reached in the negotiations will be submitted to a ballot of all the affiliated trades.
