TECHNICAL COLLEGE.
ADVISORY BOARD MEETING. A meeting of the advisory board of the New Plymouth Technical College was held on Tuesday night. Present: Messrs. G. H. Dolby (chairman), G. W. Reid, J- S. Connett, F. S. Cobham, R. Scott and the director (Mr. A. L. Moore). Leave of absence was granted to Messrs. Hugh Baily, R. J- Deare and T. N. Blackhall. A circular was read from the department, stating that the compulsory clauses would be suspended, and classes limited to 12 for technical and 18 for continuation. The director explained that the effect of this was that there were only 40 enrolments for evening classes, as against 142 for last year. A letter was also read from Mr. Watkinson, pointing out that he had sent his son to New Plymouth to obtain the benefit of instruction in plumbing classes. Mr. Connett said that it would be a very great pity if the apprentices in plumbing and other trades were deprived of these classes for instruction, and the board should make every effort to see that they were established. Mr. Scott said that the plumbing trade and registration of plumbers in it were very important from the point of view of public health, and he agreed with Mr. Connett that the class should, if possible, be carried on. Mr. Connett moved that a meeting of employers and registered plumbers be called for Monday, April 10, at 7-45 p.m., to meet the board and discuss the position. This was seconded by Mr. Scott and carried. A letter was read from the secretary of the directors and boards of managers’ annual conference. It was decided that the board be asked to send Mr. Moore to the annual conference of directors to be held in Wellington. The director reported that there were 12 new pupils enrolled, making a total of 202. The report was received. Messrs. W. H. Broome and C. C- Carter were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month.
