ENTERTAINMENTS.

ANNETTE KELLERMAN COMPANY. Annette Kellerman herself will appear at. the Empire on Monday next, for three nights only. As is well known, it was as a swimmer that Miss Kellerman first gained the attention of the world. At an early age—five years—she was taught swimming and dancing to assist in her physical development, which at the time was not too promising. Her first public appearance was made at the age of fifteen, and not a great deal of time elapsed before she won the Australasian championship, and went in for 5, 10 and more miles swimming. There was, however, no one to compete with in this direction, and Miss Kellerman made for England, and as a long-distance swimmer visited many parts of Great Britain and the Continent. She tried to swim the English Channel three times. On one occasion she was in the water for about ten hours, and on another for seven hours. In France on one occasion she was the only woman swimmer among seventeen competitors- She finished third in the race, ending exactly with Burgess, who afterwards swam the Channel. “One does not mention a few of one’s big engagements in any spirit of brag,” said Miss Kellerman to an interviewer. “I’m not a snob, and I am happy anywhere, provided the people appreciate my efforts to entertain them.” Box plan at Collier’s. EVERYBODY’S. LAST NIGHT OF BILL DESMOND. “A Broadway Cowboy,” a Pathe feature starring William Desmond, concludes to-night at Everybody’s. In this •feature the star plays the part of a stage Westerner and in this role he furnishes some of the most humorous situations that have ever been presented on the screen. Not the least amusing situation arises when the jealous sheriff catches William with a stolen horse and events loom up black against him. The leading feminine role is played by Betty Francisco, and there is a strong supporting cast. A fine two-reel comedy and gazettes are also on the bill. To-morrow’s change presents Herbert Rawlinson in his big detective drama “The Wakefield Case,” said to be one of the most baffling mystery stories that has ever been written. The interpretation of the star as the modern up-to-date investigator is seen in one of the finest roles the screen has produced. THE PEOPLE’S. ALICE LAKE IN “OVER THE WIRE.” In “Over the Wire,” the Wesley Ruggles Production for Metro, which will be seen at the People’s to-night, Alice Lake, the brilliant little screen actress, has a picture specially made for her. Strong hate that in the crucible of emotion changes to love, is the great underlying theme of this remarkable picture, which has.all the vitality*-and life characteristic of the works of Mr. Roche. The story, briefly, deals with Terry Dexter, who commits suicide rather than face exposure as a swindler by a financial magnate, John Grannan. Before Terry dies he telephones his sister. Kathleen, that the end is come. Kathleen distrait, vows she will avenge her brother’s death through ruining Grannan. This involves a series of escapades, a Wall Street coup, a marriage, elopement, and a sudden life and death adventure, where Kathleen, to her amazement, finds that she does not hate her husband, Grannan, but loves him. The bill includes gazette, comedy, and “The Fatal Sign.”
