MANAWATU SCRATCHINGS. By Telegraph. —Press Association. Palmerston N., April 4. Manawatu scratchings are: Kick Off for the Gold Cup; Viyella, Warpath and Mountain Lion for all engagements.
TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa”.) Fine weather has been experienced at Awapuni this week, and the course is in excellent order for racing on Thursday. Acceptances are first class, and racing should be of a high order. In Palmerston they like Volo, Paoanui and Little River for the Prince of Wales Handicap, and in the Telegraph Handicap the most discussed horses are Still Sea, Silver Link and Chimera.
There has been a good deal of talk about the withdrawal of Gloaming from Saturday s Gold Cup at Trentham, the general opinion being that Mr. Greenwood did not care to risk defeat by Amythas. If the Canterbury horseowner was afraid to tackle an infirm horse like Amythas, who has to be trained most carefully to allow of racing at all, as Is generally considered, it savors of the ridiculous —and such a well-trained equine as the redoubtable Gloaming could hardly have been ‘'knocked out” by the exercise gallop he had on the first day of the meeting.
Penalties only bring Mlreusonta's weight up to 7.3 in the Great Easter Handicap at Riccarton, and the double-winner at Trtothain looks to have a great show at Christchurch. Possibly there may be a surprise in store for backers in the Great Autumn, but Greenwood’s elect and Gasbag are sure to run well.
The principal winning owners at the recent Wellington meeting were: A. B. Williams £llBO, A. Goodman £lO5O, F. S. Easton £BOO, W. F. Desha £7OO, R. A. McKenzie £7OO, G. W. Greenwood £695, J. S. McLeod £575, Sir George Clifford £565, E. Riddiford £550.
Boy Reed and Harold Young, with a brace each, headed the winning jockeys. Others to score were L. Morris, R. S. Bagby, L. G. Butler, R. Hatch, T. Gordon, D. Gunn, A. Wbrniald, A. Reed, H. Goldfinch, A. J. McFlinn, J. Barry and H. Wiggins.
The Auckland light-weight, H. Wiggins, will have the mount on Detroit in the Prince of Wales Handicap at Awapuni. The old horse is going well, and may prove troublesome if the sting is out of the ground.
D. Webster will probably take Fisher, Bestir and Demoness to Australia shortly. The two first-named should pay their way on the other side.
Feilding handicaps are due on Friday, after the first day’s racing at Awapuni. Weights for the minor events at the Canterbury J.C. Easter meeting will be declared on Monday next.
Owners and trainers of trotting horses are reminded that acceptance for the Waimate Plains Trotting Club’s meeting close on Friday next, at 8 p.m.
Mr. J. B. Gaisford will be represented by Mattock and Dodo (All Red—By By) at Awapuni. Dodo, who figures in a two-year-old event on the second day, is a trifle backward in condition.
