Dr. H. B. Leatham left last night b/ the Rarawa for a short holiday visit to Auckland.

Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Boon left last night for the north, where they propose to spend three months’ holiday.

Dr. J. D. Tripe, a very old resident of Wanganui, died on Monday at the advanced age of 89 years.

Mr. vv. H. Brown, of the New Plymouth office, is relieving Mr. Burna, postmaster, Inglewood, who left for Auckland last evening on holiday leave. Messrs. W. H. Shipton and S. Holder, who are leaving Eltham shortly, were farewelled by the looal progress league on Monday evening, good wishes being expressed for their future welfare.

The Rev. H. J. and Mrs. Odell, of the Method-iet Church, Manaia, are leaving for Timaru, and on Monday evening they were entertaind and presented with a set of volumes.

The members of the Arbitration Court, Hie Honor Mr. Justice. Frazer, and Messrs. W. Scott and M. J. Reardon, leave New Plymouth this morning for Wanganui, wSiere a sitting of the court will be held.

Mr. H. R. Cattley left yesterday to attend a meeting of the executive of the Bands’ Association, to be held at Wanganui to arrange various matters

in connection with the next annual contest, which has been fixed to take place at New Plymouth. Miss Perrin, M.A., inspector of schools, has been visiting the schools of Hawera during the last week, and

on Saturday, at the Hawera Main School, she delivered an address to 40 teachers on infant teaching and hand work. A Sydney cablegram reports the death of Mrs. M. C. Stuckbury, granddaughter of the Rev. Charles Gordon, who visited New Zealand at the first mission station at the Bay of Islands, where Mrs. Stuekbury’s mother was born. She claimed to be the first white child born in New Zealand. Sir Bassett Edwards, who has not been in good health since his retirement from the Bench, and who has been in a New Plymouth private hospital for some time, is leaving for England by the s.s. Corinthic. Lady Edwards will join her husband and daughter in Europe in the course of a month or so. Mr. N. R. Jacobsen, M.A., M.Sc., of the Napier High School, is unable to take up the appointment of science master at the New Plymouth Boys’ High School, which was offered to him, and the position has been offered to, and accepted by, Mr. A. G. Johnson, M.Sc., of the staff of the King Edward Technical College, Dunedin. Mr. Johnson expects to take up his duties on July 1. He was educated at the Dunedin Boys’ High School, and obtained a Junior University Scholarship in 1899. He graduated B.Sc. in 1902, and took the M.Sc. degree in 1918 with a pass equal to second-class honors in electricity and magnetism. His teaching experience includes appointments on the staff of the Christchurch Boys’ High School, Tapanui District High School, and Timaru Boys’ High School, and he received his appointment at the King Edward Technical College in 1912. Mr. John-

son has taken a keen interest in sport, particularly in tennis and football.

There passed away on Monday, full of years and honored by all who knew him, one of the veterans of the medical profession, in the person of Dr. Julius Decnnus Tripe (says the Wanganui Chronicle). The deceased, who was 89 years of age, belonged to an old Devonshire family, who trace their ancestors ibock to the

reign of Edward IV. His father was in 1814 surgeon of His Majesty’s ship ■Grampus, 84 guns, line of battleship. Dr. Tripe was born in London, and was educated at the London Hospital College. In 1859 he obtained his M.R.C.6. degree, and in the following year, at Edinburgh, that of L.R.C.P. The deceased came to New Zealand in 1862, per ship “Asterope,” one of the Aberdeen clipper line, landing in Wellington. He went to Picton, and entered practice, being appointed provincial surgeon. His district was a very wide one, requiring much physical endurance to reach patient® in out of the way places. He was also medical officer to the militia in Marlborough. In 1873 be removed to Wanganui, and for about 40 years his name was a household word. Apart from his profession, Dr. Tripe figured largely in the life of the community. He was a keen sportsman, and for many years Was hon. surgeon to the Wanganui Jockey Club. He was hon. surgeon to the Alexandra Cavalry, and in that capacity accompanied the force on the histone expedition to Parihaka. Dr. Tripe was a very old and enthusiastic P’reemaeon. He was a Past Master of Lodge Tongariro and a P.D.S.G.W. The deceased was a gentleman in every sense of the word. His code of honor was lofty and he was ever actuated by the true spirit of charity. A widow and a son and daughter are left to mourn their loss.
