NOTES ON THE RACING. FINE RACE BY AMYTHAS. (By Wire.—Special to News.) Wellington, April 1. All acceptors started in the Second HighWeight Handicap. W’amba rushed to the front at the start, and going out of the straight he was followed by Active and Grim Joke, with Alteration handy. Alteration was kept at it to get a position, and down the back he was lying second. Across the top, however, he was not going too well. Grim Joke was the first to turn for home. Erie challenged below the distance, but made little impression on the leader, who went on to win nicely by a length and a half. Alteration, ridden right out, could only get within a neck of Erie. Maniahera was fourth, and Blue Hall fifth. Grotesque was the only withdrawal from the Hutt Handicap. Princess Pat and Prince Hal (who were bracketed). Sunny Corner and Blackmail (also coupled), Mustard Pot and Bodyguard were the best-backed. A good start was effected. Truthful, on the rails, was squeezed out at the beginning, and soon tailed the field, a position she occupied throughout the race. Capping Day hit the front inside the first furlong, and close up with her were Mustard Pot and Prince Hal. Blackmail was up behind the leader at the six-furlong post, and there was no great change iq positions on the way round to the straight. When heads were turned for home it was anyone's race, but with a furlong to go Scion took charge, and he went on to win very nicely by two lengths from Blackmail, who was a length ahead of Bonnie Heather. Mustard Pot was fourth.
Angelo was backed like a certainty in the Muritai Handicap, and hard ridden he just got up to win by a narrow margin. Liqueur was the early leader, with Basso and Dissertation close handy. This was the order to the home turn, where Liqueur was still going well. At the distance the boy was busy on Liqueur, and a little later Dissertation ran past him. At the half-distance Angelo challenged, and a great race to the post saw Angelo win by a nose. Liqueur was a length and a half away third, and Redlogue was fourth.
The whole of the thirteen acceptors In the Autumn Handicap faced the starter. Insurrection, Gasbag, Marqueteur and Kiigour were in demand. The field was let go to a good start, and as they raced past the stand Quest led Gasbag and-Sycorax, with Halifax and Kiigour in the rear. At the mile Quest was out several lengths in front of Sycorax. Next came Gasbag and Martial Dawn, and on the outside Bitters. The field closed a little In the run down the back, and bunched as they crossed the top. Approaching the straight Quest was still in charge, and Sycorax and Bitters were close up, with Gasbag and Insurrection at the head of the others. Quest was first to turn for home, and the others drew up to him at the bottom of the straight. With two furlongs to go Marqueteur came on the scene. A great race to the post ensued, and in the finish Gasbag got up In time to win by a neck from Quest, who was given second position by half a head from Insurrection. Marqueteur was fourth, Sycorax fifth. Bitters sixth anil Aureate next. In the Pacific Handicap the whole of the acceptors went to the post. Ares began well, and soon hit the front, but when they raced on to the course proper Zany was at the head of affairs. In the run home Mountain Lion, King’s Trumpeter, Killashandra, Finelli and Gold Light all showed up, but in the finish King’s Trumpeter won nicely by a length from Gold Light, who just beat Zany. Kallashandra was fourth. Rapine got away badly, and tailed the field. The Gold Cup, run over a two-mile course, was the race of the day. Amythas, though strongly fancied, was allowed to go out paying a wonderful price. Kick Qff went away with a big break, and led on to the course proper by five lengths. Trespass was next and Amythas last. Passing the stand the order was Winning Hit. Kick Off, Amythas and Trespass. The order was the same to the five furlong lost, where the leaders came back a little. Crossing the top Amythas dropped back slightly, but once heads were turned for home he raced to the front, and two furlongs from the post he had the field beaten. Galloping like a champion, he went on to win by two lengths from Kick Off, who waa a head in front of Winning Hit. Trespass was a fair fourth. Blackmail was taken out of the Suburban Handicap, and Absurduim, Rational, Still Sea and Mireusonta were well backed. Absurduni, on the rails, began well, but Mireusonta sum took charge, and led into the straight. Anunaly, Ahaurdum and Triboulet were suijm wi
I two furlongs from home, but Mireusonta held I his lead, and passed the post two lengths ahead Jof Rational, who finished well. Triboulet was • close up third. Anomaly a good fourth, and Absurdum fifth. Still Set fell below the disI tance. The meeting closed with the Belmont Handicap, for which Petunia, Danger Zone, Warpath and Merry Day were all well backed. Petunia led at the start, and at the home turn Rose of Athens had command. Below the distance Moutoa’s Gift shot out, and in the run to the post she was not headed. Merry Day again finished fast and filled second place. Landbird and Lady Nassau were at the head of the others. SUCCESS FOR THE KING. DOUBLE VICTORY AT NEWBURY. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received April 1, 5.5 p.m. London, March 31. The King’s colt Weathervane won the Im■portant three-year-old Greenham Stakes at Newbury, beating a strong Derby fancy in 'Lembach. Later His Majesty’s horse John Green won a five-furlong handicap. Enthusiasm over the Royal double win was most intense, and critics declare it was the happiest day in the racing world since Minoru won the Derby. They point out that the King’s success follows years of disappoint|ment and dis-couragement.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. Received April 2, 5.5 p.m. London, March 31. The King and Queen witnessed the double win at Newbury. Weathervane is entered for the Two Thousand Guineas, the Derby and the St. Leger. LIVERPOOL GRAND NATIONAL OBSTACLES. “MORE DANGEROUS THAN BULLFIGHTING.” OUTBURST OF INDIGNATION. Received April 2, 5.5 p.m. London, April 1. The outburst of indignation following the Grand National Steeplechase, in consequence of the fatal accidents due to the uglj- obstacles in the race, is becoming more intense. Two horses were killed in the recent Grand National, and the newspapers have since been inundated with correspondence, some of the writers asserting that Spanish bull-fighting was less cruel than the Grand National, in which thoroughbred'horses are dead and dying while other competitors are jumping over their bodies. Public Indignation is so hot that Mr. Whitaker, the well-known owner, trainer and rider, whose mount, Arrivale, fell when he had a winning chance, wrote to the authorities suggesting alterations in the conditions of the race, providing for only first-class jumpers being allowed to compete, and the remainder being grouped in the Junior National, thus ensuring reasonably-sized fields. Mr. E. Shortt (Home Secretly), replying to questions in the House of Commons, stated that he has not the power to prohibit the Grand National, but if a horse Is entered for a race for which it is unfitted it is a breach of the Protection to Animals Act. He has no evidence that such was the case.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. [ln the 1922 Grand National Steeplechase, run on March 24, thirty-two horses started, of which only five completed the course.
