COW-JUDGING COMPETITIONS.

TARANAKI S?OW AWARDS. Mr. Frank Ranford, the well-known breeder of pedigree Jersey cattle, who acted as judge of the boys’ and girls' competitions, which were held at the recent show of the Taranaki Agricultural Society, has been carefully through the cards, and his awards are as follow: GRADE COW JUDGED ON DAIRY TYPE. For primary school pupils (boys or girls).—Mary Rumball, Vogeltown school 1; Joseph Biggs, Omata school 2; B. Pease, New Plymouth Boys’ High School pre} atory department 3; Ronald Sanger, Omata school 4. PEDIGREE COW JUDGED ON BREED TYPE. For secondary school pupils.—Eva Berkitt, Stratford District High School 1; Leslie Gower, S.D.H.S. 2; Wm. Cottier, S.D.HS.. 3; Kathleen Grant, S.D.H.S. 4. Mr. Ranford, in a covering letter to the secretary of the A. and P. Society, writes: “I have had the pleasure of adjudicating these classes for some years in succession, and eacn year j. have remarked that my task has been no light one. This year is no except tion, the final placing of the awards in both primary and secondary classes being most difficult. In the secondary division the pupils were set a much harder task than at previous shows, in that I selected for that class a cow of great merit as a dairy cow, and with obviously no bad points as a Jersey cow. As natural consequence the powers o-f observation of the competitors were severely taxed. No competitor completely sized. *up the faults of the selected cow or tallied exactly with my scoring. However, the work done by quite a fair proportion of the competitors was quite good, and proves conclusively that these classes arc doing excellent work as edu'cational factors with the rising generation. The innovation made this year by numbering competitors’ qgrds in place of writing the competitor’s name thereon is, in my opinion, a distinct improvement, and one which I think should be adhered to.
