THE ANNUAL SPORTS.
SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. There was a good attendance at the Riverlea sports, which were held yesterday in fine weather. Although there was a keen wind blowing the ground was well sheltered in Mr. J. Malone’s paddock, and the conditions were pleasant. Tiie Opunake Band was present, and contributed to the enjoyment of the visitors. The officials had everything in good order, and the events were carried out without a hitch. Mr. A. E. Mills proved the right man as secretary, and to him is due to a large extent the success of the gathering. This is the first sports meeting held on the plains this year, and the committee deserve to be congratulated on their enterprise and success. Riverlea.—Won by Riverlea by 3 to nil. J. McCarthy scored a try. Kaponga v. Opunake.—Won by Opunake by 15 to nil. Tries were scored by Ifwerson, C. Rye and D. Duffy. Ifwerson converted all the tries. Auroa v. Opunake.—Opunake again proved too good for their opponents, winning by two tries (by Ifwerson and C. Rye, unconverted) to nil. Final.—Opunake Won.
