DUTIES ON WOOL.
ACTION OF AMERICAN SENATE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Wellington, March 28. The wool duties that have been adopted by the Senate Finance Committee in Washington represent a substantial advance on old duties. It. appears that fi they are confirmed, New Zealand wool, even at normal rates of exchange, will have to pay about one shilling per pound duty when it enters the United States. This is extraordinarily high duty, but brokers here state that it will not necessarily interfere with the American buying of New Zealand wool. The American farmers have succeeded in their campaign for high protection, but they cannot produce all the wool the United States requires. Americans must continue to buy abroad, and, that being so, they must pay the duty themselves, in the shape of extra charges upon their consumers. It is certain, however, that American buyers will insist more strongly than ever upon getting wellclassed, clean wool.
