NEW RAILWAY POLICY.

DRASTIC ALTERATIONS SUGGESTED. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Wellington, Tuesday. The Prime Minister stated in Auckland yesterday that he hoped in the near future to announce a new railway policy. It is rumored hero that Government is contemplating fairly drastic alterations in the management of the New Zealand railways. The present position admittedly is very far from satisfactory. The railways are being run at a heavy loss and they are not giving the services that the people require. They are being beaten by motor haulage at various points, fares have gone high enough to discourage traffic, and the commercial community is loud in complaint about freight rates. Railway systems of other countries are losing money just now, but Ministers are disposed to believe that the position in this country can be improved. The direction of contemplated reforms is not yet indicated officially, but it will not be surprising if arrangements are made to associate some business men with railway management.
