THE KING COUNTRY.
A THREE WEEKS’ TOUR. BY MEMBER FOR DISTRICT. (By Wire.—Special Correspondent.)’ Te Kuiti, Last Night. After three weeks of travelling in the back blocks, Mr. W. T. Jennings, M.P., returned to Te Kuiti to-day. The weather conditions were quite wintry, and on the unmetalled roads motors came to grief. Addresses were given at Awakino, Aria, Ongarue, Matiere and Tangitu. The district member opened a sports carnival and the new domain ground at Ongarue, and went on the Public Works’ train from Okahukura to the fourteenmile peg, where the railhead was a mile and 40 chains from Matiere. Excellent work is being done in laying sleeper* and rails. The last small bridge Will soon be completed. Matiere and the district are preparing for an unofficial opening about the middle of May. At Tangitu, the member was the guest at a social and dance on Friday night, given by the ladies of the district, and on Saturday night at a smoke concert, whereat a presentation was made by the chairman (Mr. Mcßeth), who stated that the guest was “the father of the settlement.”
