March 24. „, 1 annual report of the Stratford Chamber of Commerce, which will be presented at the annual meeting, is ae follows:
Membership and balance-sheet are satisfactory. The support accorded the Chamber has been gratifying to the committee.
Railways Construction.—Work at Tahora has not proceeded satisfactorily despite strong representations made to the Government. The importance to the whole of Taranaki of establishing through communication cannot be exa£gcrated, and no effort should be spared towards urging energetic progress. The Mount Egmont Quarry railway has not been developed and the expected supplies of stone ’have not been made available. The Stratford-Kaponga Railway recommended by the Commission which reported on that area has not been authorised.
Communication with Ohura. The metalling of tae Tangarakau Gorge has been urged. Deposits of metal suitable for road construction have been discovered in the vicinity. Telephonic connection ha ( 9 again been urged without success. Wirefess telephony has been investigated and the committee has been advised that such could be satisfactorily established at a cost of £2OO. The Government has been urged to establish same or, in the alternative, to signify consent thereto.
New Post Office.—Tenders were called but were all declined, ft is anticipated that fresh tenders will be invited shortly. The new buildings are badly needed. Arterial Road.—The advisability of adopting an inland route was placed before the Government, and was supported by the Ohura and Whangamomona County Councils. The advantage of a main road which would develop country on both sides should be amply apparent. From a tourist viewpoint the Tangarakau Gorge and the Whangamomona Scenic Reserve offer scenic attractions superior to anything on the proposed route between Auckland and Wellington.
Tangarakau Coalfields.—The Geological Survey has been made, and valuable deposits of coal are indicted. Boring opertions will probably be necessary to properly establish their value. Train Service.—The altered timetable of the Whangamomina Branch is a convenience to settlers. On the main line the afternoon service does not suit the school pupils and efforts are being made to reinstate a train which will suit them. The present timetable was instituted without the committee’s previous knowledge. Post Office.—The only improvement effected during fhe past year is the installation of a slot telephone. The lack of convenience in the present premises causes much annoyance and waste of time.
Numerous matters of minor importance continually receive attention from the committee, whose aim is to promote the welfare of the town and district by all just' means. The balance-sheet to be presented shows a balance of income over expenditure of £3 iTs. The statement of assets and liabilities shows a bank balance of £46 0s lid. PERSONAL. The funeral of the late Mrs. Reginald Wellington, who died at fhe [Stratford Hospital on Wednesday, took place at the Kapuatama cemetery to-day, under the direction of Mr. E. D. Evans. A number of good second-hand typewriters, in first-class condition, for sale; Remington, Smith Premier, Monarch, Yost, Barlock, Royal, Remington Junior and Oliver. Prices from £7 7s to £25. Type-writer supplies and repairs.—W. H. Humpnrey, Daily News office, Stratford.
