Madame Werres, to whom Jeannes boasted that he was instrumental in securing the condemnation of 126 Allied nationals, including Nurse Cavell and her colleagues, gave evidence at the Mons trial. Witness, who is a typical provincial, said that Jeannes was quartered in her house at Liege previous to the armistice. She gave her evidence clearly and intelligently, being unmoved by counsel’s severe and prolonged crossexamination and prisoner’s bullying and shouting. She said that Jeannes made the boast when he was slightly intoxicated. Two witnesses, an engineer and a barrister, who were court-martialled with Nuyse Cavell and sentenced to fifteen deposed that Jeannes was present when they werq arrested.
