MOA BONES FOUND.
DISCOVERY AT TAURANGA. A party of Tauranga residents visited the Peninsula, on which Bowentown Pa stands, a few days ago. Mr. F. A. Turner, one of the party, was successful in finding part of a Maori axe, made of stone, and numerous obsidian tools. He ’ also found the remains of a skeleton of a moa, which was discovered lying beside a heap of small stones such as are understood to have been carried in the gizards of these birds. The bones were shattered and chalky, showing that they had been exposed for a long period. Some of the pieces of shin bone were about a foot long and on being shown to Captain Gilbert Mair were identified by him as Moa bones. The stones were equivalent to a double handful and were worn and rounded
