SPORTING.

TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) Further rain fell at Bulls yesterday morning, and the course proper has been greatly benefited thereby. Nothing very startling has been registered in the way of gallops, though Mr. J. B. Gaisford has Mark Time going nicely, and the King Mark gelding may start on the second day. Mattock and the three-year-old All Red—By By filly (Dodo), in the same stable, are rounding into form. Mattock is hardly ready to show his best form, and the filly will not race at the meeting. Mr. E. Penman has a big team in work, and the rain has been welcome to several of his tenderfooted gallopers. The All Black mare owned by “Billy” Homes, has an enlarged leg, and Detroit is as sore as usual —-though this usually works off when the old horse is warmed up. Adrina looks a picture, and Mr. Joe Marumaru expects her to run well at the meeting. Others in Penman’s care are Complimentary (Gazeley —Compliment), Jasper Gate and Fran. Complimentary looks like turning out useful, but neither Jasper Gate nor Fran, (full brother to Amber Tips) show much pace. Battle Echo has been tried and found wanting. A good number of visiting trainers, jockeys and horses were expected to arrive last evening, and accommodation at the club’s stables (for 65) and accommodation house (55) has been fully booked up. The secretary, Mr. H. A, Goodall, will be assisted by Messrs. Arthur Way and Ulic Shannon at the meeting. The method of re-handicapping Opunake winners engaged at Bulls calls for some comment. Passin’ Through, who won the Opunake Cup, goes up from 8:6 to 8.13 in the Parewanui Welter, which is quite just in its way, but what excuse can be given for Mr. J. E. Henry’s action in raising Voluble 71bs. in the Scott Memorial Handicap, an open event, for winning a hack race at Opunake. Voluble is now asked to give weight to Cold Steel and Lady Kotiropo —which is ridiculous.

The start of the big race at Masterton on Saturday is described as a particularly bad one, and Starter McConnor carne in for a hot reception immediately afterwards. The light-weights broke away while Kilgour and Vagabond were moving back, and riders of the latter pair pulled up, not thinking it was a start. From that out the field ran in two divisions, just like two races, and Bitters won easily. On the running it looked as if Vagabond would have won if he had got away. Merry Day, by Merry Moments— Labor Day, was an odds on order in the Trial, and gave nothing else a chance. That her win was no fluke she proved by beating Matatua, Little River and Co. just as easily in the open Stewards’ Handicap later in the day, this time paying a two figure dividend. Bitters was the only other winner to pay a good price at Masterton. Peneus had a welter weight aboard in the Juvenile Handicap at Masterton, but it made no difference. He has now won four times on end.

Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Emeny motored through to Wellington on Saturday en route to England. Sportsmen will wish them a good trip. The announcement that R. J. Mason does not intend taking Gloaming and Co. to Australia has caused disappointment on both sides of the Tasirian, and the excuse tendered, “difficulties of transport,” appears to be a very weak one considering that two or three steamers leave New Zealand every week for Sydney or Melbourne. Egmont Park’s close second in the Opunake Cup with 8.7, enhances his prospects ir the Rangitikei Cup, in which he has 7.13, which weight will probably be reduced to 7.6 with the apprentice Conway in the saddle. Passionless and Lady Kotiropo continue to be the most discussed candidates in the open sprint at Bulls, and the pair are reported to be in great fettle. The Egmont Park—Passionless double is quoted “full book.” The “maidens” seen out at Opunake were not a good lot, and it would not surprise the writer if none of them ever showed up again. Dan Moraghan was the only trainer to lead in two winners at Opunake, and he sprang a great surprise on the public with Irapuka, who has been kept in cotton wool for a long time. Good luck, Dan.

Apprentice rider W. E. Pine rode the winning double at Opunake, and if he keeps his head he should turn out an above-the-average horseman. Rostrum, who won the Newmarket Handicap, was the eleventh-hour favorite, ousting Eurythmic from that position on the course. Rostrum began well, and never looked like getting beaten, but the judge got bustled and hoisted the wrong number. The mistake was soon rectified, and the public breathed freely again. Trotting enthusiasts are reminded that entries for the Waimate Plains T.C. annual meeting close on Friday, March 24, at 8 p.m. The programme, which appears in the News, is a fine one. the Cup being worth 500 sovs., and the minor events are all well endowed. Mr. F. C. Thomas will do the handicapping, Mr. A. Morse the starting, and Mr. J. Gray will occupy the judge's box. Programmes may be obtained from the secretary, Mr. V. B. Stratton, Box 51, Hawera.

EURYTHMIC PASSES CARBINE. HIS EARNINGS TOTAL £31,505 AGAINST £29,62x1. (“Pilot” in Sydney Referee.) For nearly thirty-one years Carbine, though long since dead, held the record for Australia as a stake-winner. But last month Eurythmic got in front of him. The vast difference in the value of stakes in Carbine’s day and to-day, however, emphasises the greatness of the latter. Carbine ran his last race when, as a five-year-old. he won the A.J.C. Plate at Randwick on April 4, 1891, and closed his career with earnings totalling £29,626. That was a record for Australia, and stood until Saturday last when Eurythmic scored his 28th win, inclusive of a dead-heat. Carbine ran five times as a two-year-old and Eurythmic six, but while at that age the former made his first appearance in December, the latter commenced his career in October. Carbine started 43 times for 33 wins, 6 seconds, and 3 thirds, being unplaced only once. His five-year-old record was better than that of any other season, his only defeat in eleven races being by Marvel in the All-Aged Stakes. Later- the same day he easily turned the tables on Marvel in the Cumberland Stakes. Eurythmic, now five years old, has competed in 35 races for 28 wins (ipclusiv? of a dead-heat) 1 second. 1

third and 5 times unplaced. This season he has won at six of his eight starts, but last season he was only beaten once in 14, that being when he finished fourth in the Melbourne Cup. During his career Carbine won three handicaps—a Melbourne Cup and two Sydney Cups; and Eurythmic has had five and a half wins in handicaps. His first was as a two-year-old; at three years, two and a half; and since then two—the Caulfield and Sydney Cups. In W.A. none of the w.f.a. races won by Eurythmic reached £lOOO in value, but of the 16 credited him in Melbourne and Sydney only six have fallen short of that amount, the richest being the A.J.C. Autumn Stakes, of £1853. On the other hand only four of the races won by Carbine, apart from handicaps, exceeded £5OO, and but two were over £lOOO, the latter being his two Champion Stakes, which respectively carried £ll4O and £1175. His only other fourfigures wins were: Sydney Cups (2), £1755 and £1775 respectively, and Melbourne Cup £10,230. For the days in which he raced his figures were wonderful. Eurythmic, as a yearling, only cost Mr. E. Lee Steere 310gns., and there is no doubt as to his being a great horse. It would be impossible to discredit any of his deeds, and nowadays a horse has to be exceptionally good to win from seven furlongs to two miles in first-class company. The manner in which Eurythmic won some of his w.f.a. raefis often caused the critics to proclaim him all out, but in those I saw him win it generally seemed to me that, as soon as Dempsey felt he had the measure of another horse, he was content to let the chestnut remain with him. Eurythmic has registered fast times for various distances, and if he meets Gloaming and Beauford, among others, in the AllAged Stakes at Randwick, a new mile record' for Australia should be the outcome. It is almost unnecessary for me to add that since Eurythmic came from W.A., J. Holt has always trained him. Eurythmic’s total of £31,505 is made up as follows: —•_ AT TWO YEARS. Unplaced in W.A.T.C. Hewitt states that he is now well established in India, and is to ride for “The Chief of Kagat,” a ruling prince, and also another prominent stable. The much-travelled “Tod” writes interestingly of things in India, and of the visit of the Prince, who, he states, has made a great impression on the natives, His Royal Highness, he remarks, overlooks nothing. He was due to present the trophies won, but noting that a jockey had been hurt in the previous race, went off by himself to the casualty room, where he spent some ten minutes with the injured horseman, and then returned and attended to his official duties. He had a great reception from all classes.
