The departure of the Moeraki for Sydney is still uncertain as no crew has been obtained. To-day Mr. W. T. Young, the seamen’s secretary, stated that yesterday he had received a letter from the general manager of the Union Company requesting the Seamen’s Federation to procure a crew for the vessel. He had replied that, under the Shipping and Seamen Amendment Act, 1909, it would be illegal for his organisation to attempt to place men on board, end there is no such provision in the preference clause of the agreement. SEAMEN’S WAGES DISPUTE. Wellington, March 16. Counter claims have been filed by the New Zealand Seamen’s Federation against the proposals of the shipowners for an Arbitration Court award in respect to seamen engaged in New Zealand ships. The Post has been informed that the proposals of ship-owners carry wages back to the rates under the agreement in operation in 1917 and represent a reduction of £4 ICs 8d per month on wages now made, except in the case of ordinary seamen, where a reduction of £3 6s 8d is asked for. The federation counter proposals suggest a daily rate of wages which is equal to an increase of £2 per calendar month on the wages current last November, or an increase of 13s lid monthly on the wages now paid.
