ENTERTAINMENTS.
EVERYBODY’S. CHAS. RAY IN “45 MINUTES FROM BROADWAY.” The story of “45 Minutes from Broadway” has to do with the adventures of Kid Burns, an ex-prize fighter from the East Side, whose friend, Tom Bennett, suddenly finds himself heir to a fortune and an estate in New Rochelle, and sends for the Kid to act as his advisei. Upon reaching New Rochelle the Kid encounters a series of adventures, and “the only girl” —named Mary—and this combination furnishes material for one of the most delightful pictures Mr. Ray has ever produced. And this picture, by the way, is the first independent production made by Mr. Ray in his own studio, and it is biggCx and more costly than any other picture this talented screen star has ever appeared in. “Forty-five Minutes From Broadway” will be shown at Everybody’s to-night and tomorrow. The bill includes gazette, comedy and “Lure of the Circus”.
THE PEOPLE’S. LAST NIGHT OF “OUT OF THE STORM.” “Out of the Storm,” an unusual type o ( film drama, concludes to-night at the People’s. “Madame Styr”, in her debut at Covent Garden Opera House, London, amazed and captivated her audience. A critic wrote next morning: “ . . . Her
voice poured forth like liquid gold, and the impassioned beauty of her singing was equalled only by the nobility of her presence.” Nobody knew who th’s wonderful sinjrer was or where sue caiv.e from—nobody, that is, except a man who sat transfixed in a lower box. Five years before he had been swept with her from the deck of an ocean liner. Together they had clung to a spar in a terrible sea until help came. And her face had haunted his dreams ever since. The climax is well brought out, and interest does not let up until the last foot of film. Gazette, comedy and “The Fatal Sign” are also on the bill. To-morrow’s change presents Conway Tearle in his big Selznick production, “After Midnight”.
“QPs”—QUALITY PERFORMERS. EMPIRE THEATRE TO-MORROW. An entirely new combination of performers—known by the novel title of “QPs” (an abbreviation for Quality PerI formers), under the direction of Southwood’s Ideal Attractions, Limited—will make their first appearance here to-morrow evening, when 17 talented artists will present a programme of new and novel items, entitled “A Harvest of Humor and Harmony”. Every item is suitably dressed and receives an appropriate setting. The performers are all thorough artists in their respective spheres. The vocalists are supported by an orchestra of talented players. There will be various melodies and harmonies introducing ukeleles, mandolins, steel guitars, banjos, violins, flute, piccolo, cornet, trombone, xylophone, chimes, tubes and other instruments. The personnel of the company includes three comedians, a male quartette, five talented ladies, an orchestra and a jazz band. Among the vocalists the company has Mr. Aneurin J. Morris, the Welsh-Australian lyric tenor, and Miss Hazel Fuller, the New Zealand
soprano, both of whom won such phenomenal popularity in Sydney when appearing with Verbrugghen’s New South Wales State Orchestra. The company has just completed a phenomenally successful six weeks’ season in Auckland. The Press eulogised their efforts with such statements as “Altogether of a quality much beyond the usual.”—Auckland Star. A very genu-
ine claim to public appreciation is possessed by Southwood’s English Quality Performers. “The word ‘quality’ as applied to them is no misnomer”—New Zealand Herald. The Wellington Press were equally of the opinion that this company is the best of its kind ever seen in New Zealand. The Dominion, commenting on the opening'performance, says: “The ‘QPs’ is the best all-round modern costume comedy company seen in Wellington.” The box plan is now open at CoUier’s.
