SCHOOL TEACHERS ON THE WALLABY
(To the Editor.) Sir, —Less than two minutes ago I read in the News that “a party of school teachers going to Awakino were held up in the mud (on Taumatamaire) until assisted out by motorists from Auckland, and that the pinion of the Aucklanders’ car was broken in the effort, also that the occupants of the two cars remained in their motors all Sunday night.” Well, I think this absolutely monstrous! The said party of school teachers did not get held up in the mud. The dandy little engine in our car absolutely surpassed itself, and, though the road was very slippery we reached Awakino aqd went on to Tongaporutu without the slightetst difficulty. It was with Mrs. McKoy that we spent the night, and as we did not get “stuck in the mud/’ as the common saying goes, there was no necessity for any car to help us out. lOn the northern side of the hill we met a car, the occupants of which strongly advised us to “stay where we were,” “we hadn’t a hope of getting to the top,” but brave old Canad-a spoke up, and said: “No fear, we are Britishers every one, and Bull-dogs, so we mean to stick it and succeed.” “Too true,” cried all of us, and on we went. AVhat fools we’d have been had we stayed! A little car with two motorists was also left far behind; hadn’t a hope of keeping up with a dauntless crew of six! At Awakino one of our passengers left us, as she had reached her destination. I cannot say where the occupants of the other cars spent the night, but I do know this, that we had the pleasure of paying homage to Mrs. McKoy’s tea-pot, and had beautiful, clean and comfortable beds to sleep in. We knew what we were doing, and well .vill be remember and laugh over the snap-shots taken bj a successful party of schoolteachers’ and their dandy chauffeur.— I am, etc.,
•ONE OF THE BRITISH BULL-DOGS.”
