OPUNAKE.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The topic of conversation is the Opunake Racing Meeting. Training operations have been going on for some time. The parties engaged in this work have accommodation provided for them and catering is carried out under the club’s supervision. Local dressmakers have been busy for some weeks executing orders for the lady patrons of the races. Several minor accidents occurred to young children recently. One schoolboy (C. Pulford) accidentally put a school pencil up his nostril and gave Dr. Watt a little trouble to extricate it. Jim Malcolm severely lacerated his foot on a broken bottle, whilst a child (Ross) fell on a broken jug and cut his wrist, necessitating three stitches being put in the cut. At the nursing home last week an inmate increased the Opunake population with two sons. Mrs. Arthur Crawford, who has been for some weeks in the Hawera hospital, is improving in health. The Opunake Dairy Company ceased making casein last week. The market for this Commodity is flat. Several big lines of dairy stock (principally of one and two-year-olds) have been taken through this district to other centres. It is an indication that there is a little more busineses being done in this class of stock.

The Methodist Harvest Thanksgiving services were held on Sunday. The church was suitably decorated with the fruits and flowers of the bountiful harvest. The Rev. E. Harkness preached an eloquent sermon at the morning service. On Monday evenin" the generous gifts were sold by auction. The Town Board has applied to the department for a loan of £l,OOO for the purpose of erecting workmen’s houses. The loan is guaranteed by a rate. The board has sufficient land for several houses, but it is proposed to go slowly .with the experiment of erecting houses. If the proposal turns out satisfactory, further buildings will be erected.

The Town Board has issued its new proposals with regard to the leasing of town building sites. The Board has wisely decided to give lessees under the old tenure the right to convert under the new terms. Those who have erected buildings on. the Town Board sections will surely take advantage of the new provisions. The Opunake Power Board met on Saturday to discuss the striking of a rate and loan proposals. The Town Board are still administering the hydroelectric business until the Power Board takes over control.
