A VICIOUS ATTACK.
AFFAIR AT MIDHIRST. AN ARREST MADE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Stratford, Last Night. A serious assault on a man named George Speck was committed at Midhirst on Tuesday night. The police state that Speck, who is a middle-aged man, was attacked by a man with a piece of wood and had his head and face severely battered, and was then stabbed with a pitchfork. The police at Stratford were informed of the incident by telephone, and Sergeant Dale proceeded to Midhirst, where he found Speck badly knocked about, his eyes being black arid the face shockingly cut. The sergeant dispatched Speck to the hospital, and after investigating, arrested a man named Edward O’Connor, who lives at the foot of \ the mountain, on a charge of assault- | ing Speck. The sergeant stated that an argument had apparently taken > place between the two men, and the offence with which O’Connor was charged was then alleged to have taken place. O’Connor was brought before the Magistrate’s Court at Stratford yesterday and was remanded till March 22, bail being allowed in eelf of £*2oo or two sureties of £lOO each, or one of £4OO. Speck’s condition is not at present considered dangerous.
