THE RANGITIKEI MEETING FIRST DAY'S ACCEPTANCES By Telegraph.—Press Association. Bulls, Last Night. Acceptances for the first day of the Rangitikei meeting are: SCOTT MEMORIAL HANDICAP.

TRIAL PLATE. Whiz Bang Hallowell Bonny Rill Atapo Golden Foam Legato Orellana Haeremoana Pam Treadwell Red Stag Tussore Yankee Jack Esalt Complimentary Coinmandress Eonmark Miss Beaufort Adri n a Released TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.") Waimate annual meeting to-day. All aboard for Opunake to-morrow. Palestrina should be "hard” In the Waimate Cup. The dogs are barking Fibre for the Opunake Hurdles. Sleight of Hand is in work again under V. Collelo at Hastings. After racing at Dannevirke Bennie Briar was returned to her owner. If Tatau Tatau is ever going to win a race it should be at Waimate. Moutoa’s Gift shaped disappointingly at Marlborough, but she may be better next season. Birkie and Passionless are ffoing well at Awapunl, and are fit to win at any moment. If recent form is any sort of guide Kareao should engage the judge’s attention at Opunake. Ashley Reed, with 52 firsts, is well ahead in the jockeys' premiership. Charlie Emerson has scored 31, Roy Reed 28, and Con Reed 25. Possibly some of our trotting enthusiasts may have been puzzled over Ahuriri’s “record ti<me” of 2min. 30see., wtich appeared in yesterday’s paper. The correct time was 2min. 20sec.—a great “go" for a two-year-old if correct. King’s Trumpeter, who won a double at Napier, and paid good dividends, races in the colors of Mr. W. F. Desha, and is by Clarenceux (sire of Palestrina) from Bon Bord (Boniform—Ormolu). Alf. Wright is getting his team ready for the winter jumping season, and his ’chasers. First Line and Foeman, are in steady work at Foxton. Both are reported to be looking very well. As anticipated, Sunray was not long in winning a hack hurdle race. He is a fine jumper, and early in the season was “the bracelet king,” winning seven out of his first nine races this season, and running second in tte others. Sunray is a six-year-old gelding by Fort Williaun—Dazzling, and is a horse with a future. A Palmerston scribe states that Rowley Hatch has Lady Kotiropo looking very well at present. Automoana and Haeremoana are the other members of Hatch’s team.

Moderate fields will be seen out at the Masterton meeting on Saturday. Kilgour and Chimera look well in the open races, and Conflict, Kilreld, Peneus, Sir Roseberry, Little River, and Doucement should run prominently In the oninor events.

The far reaching effects of the drastic provisions of the Gaming Act of 1908—not until recently enforced—have surprised even those representatives of racing clubs, on whose suggestion our paternal government passed such nonsensical legislation, and it -is now certain that the Racing Conference will be asked to approach Parliament with a view to modifying the hasty and ill-conceived enactments of 1908. In conversation with a prominent racing official this week the writer learned that racing “heads" were practically unanimous that the law should never have been enforced, and that under the Act of 1908 practically nobody was safe from expulsion from a racecourse—if not arrest. The other day the driver of an ambulance on a racecourse was “chatted" that his presence was not desired, some detective having found out that in the dim and distant past the ambulance man had committed some heinous offence, such as calling a “blanker" by his right, name, or going to bed with his pants on. The totally unexpected and unreasonable workings of the Act have disgusted its progenitors, and my informant states that a meeting will be held in Wellington shortly, which the stipes and 'tecs will attend, to consider the whole absurd business, and it is quite on the cards that the powers that be will drop the enforcement of the law as regards the general public, the bookmaking fraternity excepted, until Parliament sees fit to wipe such legislation off the slate.

Opinions differ greatly as to how Gloaming, Eurythmic and Beauford would finish at the end of a mile at Doncaster weights. Beauford (not “Beaufort," as most papers state) is the champion '‘miler’’ on the other side, and has 10.5, which is lib more than Gloaming and Eurythmic are asked to carry. A lot of things may happen in a big field, such as is likely to be seen out in a Doncaster, but if the trio met—all being fit and well—this scribe’s investment would certainly go on Gloaming. In fact, from four furlongs to a mile and a quarter “Moturoa" would put his undergarments on the big 'Hie Welkin gelding 1

Amongst the entries for the A.R.C. Easter Handicap are the following:—Silver Link, Rational, Hipo, Mockery, Income, Cold St'eel, Danger Zone, and Still Sea. Of tte others engaged the most notable appear to be Tamatete. Insurrection, Molyneaux, Rouen, Vespucci, Egotism, Pluto, Uncle Ned, Absurdum and Silver Peak.

Recorded that Ahurlri, who won the Dash Handicap at the Marlborough Trotting meet*

ing, put up a fresh Australasian record for two-year-olds by covering a mile in 2.30. The light-weight horseman, C. Stephens, is appealing to the New Zealand Racing Conference against the six months’ suspension recently imposed upon him by the Wanganui District Committee, but so far no date has been set down for the hearing.
