THEFT OF MOTOR CAR.
’ TWO MEN ARRESTED. ANOTHER CHARGE PENDING. Two young men, Stanley Roy Montgomery * and Harry Hampton, both of whom gave their ages as 21, were arrested yesterday at New Plymouth and Tongaporutu respectively on a charge of stealing a motor car at Auckland. The car, which was the property of Mr. Arthur P. Lowe, of Epsom, was taken on March 11. It is alleged the two men made tracks south and branched off inland. They got about 15 miles on the northern side of Awakino, where a hitch occurred with the car and they abandoned it on the roadside. Their undoing came as the result of a telegram from the Hamilton police to the Waitara police stating that the men were seen driving in that direction. Constable La Pouple telephoned the message to New Plymouth, and yesterday afternoon Montgomery was apprehended *at New Plymouth by DetectiveSergeant Cooney and Constable Palmer. Hampton was secured by Constable Blaikie at Tongaporutu, where he had secured employment. From what has transpired it is stated that a further charge will be made against the men of breaking and entering a draper’s shop at Te Awamutu and stealing a quantity of goods, including seven suits of clothes and some overcoats. Some of the apparel has been recovered. Hampton was brought into New Plymouth yesterday and both men will appear before the Court to-day and will probably be remanded to Hamilton or Auckland. They stated to the police that they had been out of work for some months. The car was a fiveseater Dodge valued at £465.
