DISTRICT NEWS.

PUNGAREHU. (From Our Own Correspondent.) In spite of the very squally weather which prevailed on Sunday last the Methodist Church was well filled on the occasion of the Sunday school anniversary. The Rev. C. Aker conducted the afternoon service, and addressed the children, of whom there was a good number present from Rahotu with the superintendent and teachers of that school. The prizes according to merit were awarded at the close of the service, Alex Hamill winning the first in the senior and Esme Grenfell first in the junior classes. A special prize for attendance and general merit was also awarded to Alex Hamill. A duet was rendered by Ivy Corbett and Esme Grenfell and the boys sung a hymn during the service. Mr. T. Hughson, jnr., occupied the pulpit at the evening service, and gave an appropriate and interesting address, which was very attentively listened to by the children, as well as their parents. The special singing of the boys was again a pleasing feature of the service, and a solo was sung by Miss Esme Grenfell. The Egmont County’s crusher has finished crushing metal on the Pungarehu Road, and has, 1 understand, now gone to the Burgess Road. The staff of the local factory is being reduced as occasion requires. One or two vats are now out of commission for the season, with a consequent reduction of workers.

The Cape Egmont Co-operative store department paid a very substantial rebate on goods purchased in 1921, which is a good sign of the prosperity of this part of the business. Mr. Percy C. Smith has been chosen to fill the vacancy on the directorate of the factory and store, caused by the resignation of Mr. W. R. Wright. Mr. Smith is young and energetic and will no doubt prove a valuable acquisition to the board. x In accordance with the order to clear up their premises, it is pleasing to note that some residents at least are eager to concur with the efforts of the County Council, and are accordingly getting rid of refuse and litter which would harbor rats. In the absence of a depository for rubbish I ’notice that some has been brought on to a road side near the village. Mushrooms are beginning to make their appearance, but they are not by any means plentiful yet. The next rain should bring them up in fair* quantities, as the season for these table delicacies is now here. Mrs. Mason, of New Plymouth, is visiting her sister. Mrs. McKenna. Miss Phyllis Mathews has been on a visit to her parents. The Rev. H. A. Coleman, vicar of Okato, will hold service in the hall on Sunday, the 12th, at 2.15 p.m.
