At the wool sales there was an average selection and bidding was very brisk by Home and Continental buyers at full rates. Competition is further widening and the tone is strong. The Ohoka clip brought top price, 38%d, average 34d. Bradford top-makers are very firm and have advanced quotations. Spinners are holding off and business Is small. Sixty-fours, MayJune, 48d to 50d; fifty-eights, 35d; fifty-sixes, 27d; fifties, 21d; forty-sixes, LONDON MARKETS. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., have received the following cablegram from their London bouse under date March 8: Tallow.—We quote present spot values for the following descriptions: Fine mutton, 42s 3d per cwt.; good beef, 41s 3d per cwt.; mixed, 35s 9d per cwt. Market inactive. New Zealand frozen meat: Lamb, 10 %d per lb.; new season, ll%d per lb.; wether and maiden ewe, light 7 l-8d per lb., heavy 6%d per lb.; ewe, light 5 7-8 d per lb., heavy s&d per lb. Beef: Market dull, nothing doing. Last quotations: Ox, hinds 4 l-8d per lb.; fores 27-8 d ppr lb, March 1; Cow, hinds 3%d per lb., fores 2d per lb. AUSTRALIAN MARKETS. Melbourne, Marek: 10. Hides.—Heavies, stouts and extreme lights unchanged, other sorts par to a farthing lower according to condition. Barley.—English 4s 4d, Cape 3s to 3s Id. Oats.—-3s to 3s sd. Potatoes.—£4 to £4 10s. Onions.—£7 to £7 10s. LONDON WOOL SALES. New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, have received the following cablegram from their London house under date 7th instant:— Wool Sales.—There was a full attendance at the opening of the sales to-day, competition by Home and continental buyers being fairly active, and prices as compared with the close of preceding series ruled in buyers favor for Merino and fine crossbred 5 per cent, to 10 per cent., and for medium and coarse crossbred 5 per cent, to 7% per cent. The opening catalogues were fairly representative. America is buying suitable lots of Merino. POULTRY MARKET. Messrs. Nolan and Co. report: Hens Is 8d to 3s 6d, pullets 7s, cockerels Is 6d to 21 7d, small 6d to Is 4d, ducks 2s 5d .o 3s 4d. Webster Bros, report: Cockerels Is 6d. THE MARKET. At Newton, King. Ltd.'s New Plymouth baymarket yesterday there was a small penning .of pigs. Good slips made from 9s to 10s ; small stores 13s 6d to 16s 6d, larger 19s 6d. FARMERS’ CO-OP’., LTD., REPORT. At Hamilton on Tuesday, March 7, we had a fair yarding of sheep and cattle with another large yarding of pigs. Sheep improved slightly while beef was on a par with last week. Improved values at which figure there was a ready sale. Light weight baconers and porkers advanced on last week, heavy baconers being much the same, Auckland buyers operating freely, the. demand being fully equal to the supply. We quote: Wethers, light (no prime wethers yarded) 15s 6d, fat ewes 12s 6d to 13s, forward lambs to 13s lOd. others 7s 4d to fts 9d, 2-tooth ewes 14s, f.m. ewes 10s to Ils, aged and poor ewes 4s to 8s 6d, fat steers £5 10s to £6 (no heavy weights), cows best £4 6s to £6 5s for a pen of Herefords, lighter fat cows £2 14s to £3 10s, store cows 19s to 345. The advertised line of bullocks failed to reach the reserve, 2% to 3-year steers £2 15s to £3 13s. No young cattle yarded. Baconers £3 5s to £3 18s, porkers £2 2s to £3 2s. slips 22s to 335, weaners 12s to 13s for the best, others 6s to 10s. BURNSIDE MARKET. SHEEP AND LAMBS A SHADE DEARER. Dunedin, March' 8. Each department of fat stock was well supplied at the Burnside sales tp-day, with the exception of lambs, which were in somewhat shorter supply. Sheep and launbs were a shade dearer. Bidding was very keen and healthy, rivalry prevailed throughout the lamb sale. Pigs met with a firm sale. Fat cattle were decidedly easier in price. Fat Cattle.—A large yarding of good quality, numbering 217 hqad. Competition was not so keen as was the case at last week’s sale and prices showed a reduction of from 15s to 30s per head. Prime ox beef was worth up to 22s 6d per 1001 b. Prime bullocks realised from £lO 15s to £l2 ss, medium £8 to £lO, light and unfinished sorts from £7 upwards. Prime heifers realised from £7 10s to £8 ss, medium £6 to £7, light and aged from £4 10s upwards. Sheep.—A large yarding, numbering 2578 head. The standard of quality was below that of late yardings. Buyers were not consistent in their value, bidding being unsteady and erratic, although taking the sale on the whole there was an Improvement in values of from ftd to is 6d per head above last week's rates. Unfinished wethers and ewes were v4ell competed for, values for these being relatively higher than those realised for fats. Sound mouth ewes were also eagerly
competed for at prices ranging up to 16s per head. Prime wether mutton was worth 3*4d to 3’4d per lb. Extra prime heavy-weight wethers realised from 28s 3d to 33s 3d, prime 22s 6d to 26s 6d, unedium 19s to 21s 6d, light and unfinished sorts 16s upwards. Prime ewes 17s 9d to 19s 3d, medium 15s to 17s, light and aged from Ils upwards.
Lambs.—A small yarding, numbering 679 head, of fair quality. On account of the reduced number offered bidding was keen, and in the majority of cases butchers outbid freezing buyers. This resulted in an advance of 13 6d per head above last week's rates being obtained. Prices, ranged from 16s to 25s 9d per head. These prices work out at 7d per < lb. * Store Cattle.—A (medium yarning was offered for sale. There was quite a dearth of good steers, the bulk of the yarding consisting of yearlings and aged cows. The demand was lifeless and very low prices had to be accepted in order to effect sales.
Pigs.—A medium yarding, all classes being represented. There was good competition and prices were very firm. Best baconers realised from 7d to 7%d per lb, and best porkers from 8d to B%d per lb.
ADDINGTON STOCK MARKET. ALL-ROUND EASING IN VALUES. Christchurch, March 8. At the Addington market to-day there were again exceptionally big yardings, practically all the space in the yards being utilised. There was an all-round easing, and tmore passings in both cattle and sheep than last week. Store Sheep.—Another heavy penning, approximating 30,000, drawn from a wide field —the Chatham Islands, Southland, Marlborough, and Nelson —much of it travelled, and a good proportion of ewes of inferior quality. There was a fair clearance, good ewes selling spiritedly. Lambs were slightly easier, particularly poorer sorts. Forward rape lambs made 14s 3d to 16s Id, good lambs 12s 6d to 14s, medium 9s 6d to 12s, small and infaciar 7s te 8s 3d, eull 4s to 6* 90. iGeed
4 and G-tooth, ewes made 18s 9d to 225, good 18s 9d to 21s, ordinary I4s to 18s, lowconditioned and inferior 9s to. 13s 6d, inferior 2-tooth ewes Ils 6d to 14s, good 5-year-old 12s 6d to 15s 9d, rap® 7« 6d to 9s 3d, cull 2s ,2d to 5s 6d. Good forward 4 and 6-tootb wethers made 15s to 17a 2d, fair 12s to 14s 9d, inferior 9s 6d to Us 6d, 2-tooth Ils 6d to 15s 3d, inferior 2-tooth 9s 9d to 11s. Fat Lambs.—so4o were penned, a big proportion being lighter sorts. There was & further easing, the over-all price being 6%d. Butchers secured a bigger proportion of heavier sorts. Extra prime lambs made 22s 6d to 255, prime 18s 9d to 225, medium 16s 3d to 18s 6d, light and unfinished 13s 9d to 16s.
Fat Sheep.—An overflow yarding, threequarters being ewes. Good prime wethers practically held their own, but all otter classes were easier, particularly heavy ewes. Freezers secured the bulk of the light-weight sheep, values coming comfortably within their limits. Extra prime wethers made 29s 9d, primal 19s 3d to 235, medium 17s 3d to 19s Id, light 15s to 17s. Prime ewes made 16s to 19s sd*, medium 13s 9d to 15s 9d, light and inferior 9s to 13s 6d.
Fat Cattle.-—An easier market than last week, and considerabe passings in secondary quality beef. Extra prime steers made £l5 to £l9 ss, prime £lO 10s to £l4, medium £8 to £lO ss, inferior £6 5s to. £7 15s. Extra prime cows made £8 15s to £lO 2s 6d, prime £5 10s to £8 ss, ordinary £8 5s to £5 7s 6d. Prime heifers £6 to £8 10s x ordinary £4 to £5 15s. Vealers.—Calves fit for butchering sold well. Runners made £5, good vealers £3 to £3 15s, medium £1 17s 6d to £2 2s 6d, small calves 3s upwards. Store Cattle.—7’vee and four-year-old steers made £4 to £4 15s, 2-year-old £2 to £2 10s, yearling steers 15s to £1 2s 6d, two-year-old heifers £4, yearlings £1 17s 6d to £2, unedium cows £1 7s 6d to £1 17s 6d. Dairy Cattle.—A big yarding, Including some purbred cattle, which sold well. Values for ordinary classes were about equal to late rates. Good second and third ' calvers made £8 to £l2, ordinary £4 to £7 ss. Good springing heifers made £l3, ordinary £7 10s to £ll, aged and inferior cows £1 10s to £4. Fat Pigs.—‘Choppers made £2 10s to £3 ss, light baconers £3 5s to £3 IDs, heavy £4 to £4 10s, extra heavy £5 (average price per lb 6%d), light porkers 47s to 525, heavy 55s to 60s (average price per ib 8d to B%d). ' Store Pigs.— A. weaker demand. Large stores ip -'le 455, medium 20s to 32s 6d, good weaners 10s to 12s, small*ss to 9s, sows in pig £3 13s.
