THE WANTS OF OHURA.
GOOD ROADS AND RAILWAY THE PIOPIO COALFIELDS. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE TOUR. (By Wire.—Special Reporter.) Piopio, March The members of the Taranaki of Commerce party had an enjoyable cif* cular drive of thirty to forty miles through the Turoto and Tokirima districts yeaterday afternoon. It is hilly country, contains good fertile flats. The visitors were entertained at Ohura last night, when speakers stressed the opinion that without good roads and the completion of the railway mutual interests were impossible. Mr. T. C. Liat, responding, said the railway should be made a national work and placed first on the list under construction in the North Island. The Government showed an error of judgment, but he advised that in view of the Government'* present policy they should press their claims for metalling the road from Tahora to Ohura, an outside estimate of the cost of which was £30,000. Telephone connection between Tatu and Tahora wm alao an urgent need. Mr. Newton King, responding on behalf of the Harbor Board, mentioned that aince the last meeting of the board the shipping companies had advised that the extra charge of transhipping imposed when goods direct to New Plymouth were over-carried for any reason, and which was previously done at the consignee’s risk, had been cancelled. He hoped that soon the extra charge of five shillings a ton over the main ports imposed by the shipping companies because they said New Plymouth was an unknown port would also be canoelled. The party left for Piopio at 8.30 am. today, via Waitewhena valley, visiting the coalfield twelve miles out. The coalfield covers an extensive area ten mils* by twenty-four miles with an average seam ofMfl ten feet and they are practically inimitable.Tn The country near Aria opens out and the roads improve considerably. The party had lunch at Piopio at 12.30 before departing for Mokau. Awakino, March 10. The Chamber of Commerce party arrived at Awakino after a three hours’ trip from Piopio over the Taumatamaire.
