'Mr. Newton King, who has been on a visit to the Ohura, returned to New Plymouth by the mail train last night. Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Adlam left yesterday on a holiday visit to Alton and \Vaverley. A London cablegram states that the King gave an audience to Sir John Salmond, New Zealand • representative at the Washington Conference. Mr. A. W. Diprose, of the New Plymouth Boys’ High School, has received advice that he has obtained his M.A. degree with second class honors.
A Melbourne cablegram reports the death of Mr. John Smith, proprietor of the Kaurangi Stud. He bred Wallace, Trafalgar and others. A meeting of Liberals and Moderate Labor at 'Featherston on Thursday night officially selected Mr. John W. Card, solicitor, of Featherston, as a candidate for the Wairarapa seat at the coming elections.. The following have been appointed as members of the Taranaki Land Purchase Board: James Francis Stevenson, of Manaia; William Brooks Grant, of New Plymouth; Leslie Hamilton, of Manutahi.
The late Mrs. E. A. Lloyd, who died suddenly at the Waingongoro beach yesterday, was one of the oldeet residents of Eltham. She was the first white woman to go to the township, where she arrived in 1880 with her husband, who predeceased her nearly 20 years ago. The Sydney papers announce that Mr. E. J. Gravestock has severed his connection with the managerial staff of J. and N. Tait, and is going into the concert promotion business on his own account, commencing with Miss Rosina Buckman and Mr. Maurice d’Oisely, who open in New Zealand in June.
Mr. W. G. Emeny, of New Plymouth, well-known as licensee, of the 'Royal Hotel for the last nine years and formerly of the White Hart and Rahotu Hotels, leaves shortly on an extended trip abroad. Last night a number of intimate friends gathered at the Royal Hotel to bid good-bye to Mr. and Mrs. Emeny, when many kind tilings were said concerning the goodwill felt for both. A travelling bag for Mr. Emeny and a rug for Mrs. Emeny expressed in tangible form the appreciation felt ny the donors at the many kindnesses received. It was stated that during an eleven years' residence in New Plymouth Mr. and Mrs. Emeny had made a host of friends, who expressed the hope that the trip would be a pleasurable one and would see them return much benefited in health.
