The Napier Park Racing Club's autumn meeting opened to-day in beautiful weather. There was a large attendance and splendid racing. Not a single favorite won during the day; in fact, most of them finished out of a place. A sum of £15,819 was put through the totalisator, against £21,187 last year, a decrease of £5368. Results:— OMARUNUI HURDLES.—Sunray 1, Wamba 2, Whanoko 3. Also started: Raffle, Balrasdale, Tornea. Won by two lengths. Time, 3min. 17sec. ESK HACK HANDlCAP.—Communicate 1, Black Art 2, Warpath 3. Also started: Ruruwai, Landbird, Barrier, Suspicion, Blissfulness, Moreau. Won by a length. Time, 1 min. 15 4-ssec. NAPIER CUP.—Sycorax (Reed) 1, Hyrax 2, Paonui 3. Also started: Ngata, Molyneaux, Gasbag, Anomaly, Truthful, Prince Jewel, Hookah, Bagdad, Zircon, Actlfld, Martini. Truthful, Anomaly and Ngata formed the leading division for six furlongs, wten Hyrax and Sycorax each made a forward move. Sycorax drew away in the straight. Anomaly was two lengths from Hyrax, Paonui was third, and Gasbag was fourth. Time, 2min. 28 4-ssec. SAPLING STAKES.—-King’s Trumpeter 1, Good Sport 2, Viyella 3. Also started: Morose, The Linnet, Gold Light, Rapine, • Diamond Ring. Golr* Light was left at the post. Won by two lengths. Time, Imin. 2 2-ssec. WELTER HANDICAP.—Queens Up 1, Hyttus 2, Lord Musketry 3. Also started: Tlgritia, Makere, Bodyguard, Haurangl, Earthshine. Woden, Poet. Heads divided the first three torses. Time, Imln. 28 3-ssec. MAIDEN HACK SCURRY.—Mystico 1, Megan 2, Reality 3. Also started: Morgen, Merry Bells, Misrule, Whariti, Big Chief, Red Stag, Queens Ferry, Bashful. A good race to the post resulted in Mystico winning by a head. Time, Imin. 4 l-ssec. REDCLIFFE HACK WELTER.—Dissertation 1, White Hope 2, Marcus 3. Also started: Patuki, Correspondent, Westerner, Fera, Antler, Munus, Black Tea, Wawata, Will Prosper. Won comfortably by two lengths. Time, Imin. 44sec.

THE ACCEPTANCES. The acceptances for the Opunake Racing Club’s annual meeting, which closed last evening, are very satisfactory, and give promise of a very successful gathering on Friday next. The list is as follows; HACK HURDLES. 200 sovs; one mile and a half*

TURF TOPICS. (By "Moturoa.”) Uruti Beach races to-day. Opunake races on Friday next. \ Marlborough and Napier meetings conclude to-day. Acceptances for the Rangitikei meeting close on Wednesday. Mannikin broke a leg recently and had to b? destroyed. Chrysostom and Caricature have been shipped to Sydney. Radiant Light is being boomed for the Great Northern Oaks. Lochella is in work again, and is reported to be quite sound. Sunray is a fine jumper, and should be heard of before the winter wanes. Punters bad a bad tiune at the Banks Peninsula meeting, only one favorite getting home. Wish Wynne, who won the Maiden at Te Aroha, is a half-sister (by Marble Arch) to King Chiara. The Quin Abbey gelding Snake has started eighteen times this season.for six wins, four seconds and two thirds. Shuja (Soult —Sprite), who carried Messrs. Matthews’ colors in Taranaki some twelve years ago, was represented by a double winner, Suie, in 'Stralia last month.

At Ascot (Aus.) the other day the champion 14.2 pony, Precious Dust, carried 12st. and won pulling up by two and a half lengths in 48%sec. for the four furlongs.

The New Zealand-bred horse Crenides rau his best race to date in India when he finished second in the Macpherson Cup at Calcutta, being beaten by a length in 2min. 19 3-ssec. for eleven furlongs. Crenides paid a great second div.

Probably the last has been seen of that great sprinter Greenstead on the track, for he broke down so badly in the Futurity Stakes at Caulfield that his rider dismounted in the straight. Greenstead was owe of the few bargains of the turf, costing 100 guineas and winning £13,800 m stakes alone.

Sydney papers report that L. H. Hewitt has struck riding form in India, the muchtravelled New Zealander scoring twice at Bombay last month. Hewitt, has “magged” himself into a job with “Mr. R\R.,” one of the big pens in the racing world over there.

The big race at Flemington to-day is the King’s Plate, of 1500 sovs., run over two miles at standard weight-for-age. Amongst the horses engaged are Eurythmic 9.4, Tangalooma 9.1, The Rover 9.1, Purser 9.1, David 9.0, Stare 8.0, frarvest King 8.0, Sister Olive 7.11, and Furious 7.11. On paper Eurythmic looks unbeatable, but Harvest King, who won the Australian Cup from end to end, may keep the champion from catching a. chill.

Mr. J. B. Gaisford has Mark Time, Mattock, and Dodo (All Red—By By) in work at Bulls, and the first-named pair will race at the Rangitikei meeting. Celmisla and Projector ar.e spelling, the mare being blistered before being turned out.

An exchange tells the following tale of how a well-known horse-owner choked off a too persistent inquirer for tips. Receiving a wire reading: “What do you fancy to-day?” he replied (collect) : “A large whisky and soda with ice in it.”

A Palmerston scribe reports the death of Mr. A. W. (“Bos’un”) Cowper, a well-known trainer In' years gone by. Cowper was known al) over New Zealand as the trainer of Moifaa and other noted horses.

They only race once a year in the Chatham Islands, and then they make a “welter” of it. Evening, who won the Cup and the Ladies’ Purse, also ran third in the Jockey Club Handicap, and unplaced in the Waitangi Plate, running 6% imiles during the afternoon. Gee Whizz, who did 4 miles 5 furlongs. Elderberry, 4|i miles, and the ancient Moana, 4% miles, also worked overtime.

Veteran ".Jimmy” Buchanan made light of his fifty-odd summers at the Te Aroha meeting, where he rode the Cup' winner Raccful, and Mumble, winner of the Tourists’ Welter. Buchanan trains both horses, and both in riding and training he can still give points to most of the younger brigade.

Silver Peak continues to win good sprint races in ti e south, and no weight seems to trouble the daughter of Adjudge. She has won three races recently, and hits hardly been out of a place in her last dozen starts.

Sasanof is reported to be flow used as a hack for a Waikato priest, but he is nbt the only Melbourne Cup winner that, has fallen into such hands, for Poslnatus is another that is now ridden by “one of the cloth.” Yet another is Lucky Escape, winner of the Perth Cup and Imperial Stakes, who now carries Father O’Grady, of Jarrahland.

Sportsmen who attend the Uruti Beach races to-day are assured of a good day’s sport. The committee have worked hard for the success of the gathering, and the class of horses will be much above those usually seen at a picnic meeting. As reported by our Urenui correspondent, horses from as far south as Hawera will be present, and all available stable accomimodation has been •booked up. The first race commences promptly at 11.30 a.m., and eight events are carded. Those who enjoy a combined race and picnic outing should not miss thd trip. Roy Reed has made a good recovery from his fall off Epitaph at Hastings, and although forced to forego Dannevirke engagements, has accepted several mounts for the Rangitikei meeting. Shearsby has Yankee Dan looking very well at present, and on Dannevirke form the prad should soon notch a win. Tn these hard times one does not meet so many “bites” on a racecourse as when things \vere “blooming,” possibly because the “bites” have found that those that have money are not disposed to lend It at the present juncture. At. Woodville the other day one particular chgpky person breasted up and asked a well-known owner for (breathe it gently) “a score.” The owner promptly turned him down, and tried to 'square off by tendering a “deener” for a drink. The cheeky person nerirly screamed: “A deener,” he exclaimed, “what blanky use is that? It’s like offering a sen-sen to an elephant,” and he was lost I la the crowd.
