MR. MASSEY.
VISIT TO OPOTIKI. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. Opotiki, March 9. Mr. Massey arrived at five o’clock yesterday from Gisborne. A large crowd assembled in the afternoon to attend the unveiling ceremony of a monument to fallen soldiers, erected at a cost of £2200 and bearing over 100 names. There were many floral emblems. Returned soldiers and other units paraded, the former providing a firing party. Mr. Massey, in a vigorous speech, reijalled the heroic deeds of soldiers and sailors during the war and said that the same elements were at work to-day that caused the war in 1914. He hoped that in years to come, if war came, it would find the Dominion prepared to . help to defend the Empire as m the late war. , , __ Mr. Williams, M.P.. and the Hon. kF. B. Gow were amongst other speaker-. The Premier left at seven for Whakatane and owing to the shortness of his stay was unable to receive a deputation, which caused keen disappointment. Tepuke, Last Night. The Prime Minister, accompanied by Sir Wm. Herries and Messrs. K. BWilliams, H. Poland, and F. Hockley, M.P. s, and the Hon. J. Gow, M.L.C., arrived here to-day from East Coast districts for the purpose of opening the new battery mines gold reefs, situated nine miles from the township. Sir Win. Herries opened war memorial gates and tablets at the local high school. The party then proceeded to the mine, where, in the presence of a large crowd, the Premier started the battery working. To-night Mr. Massey was entertained at * banquet by the people of the district To-morrow morning he receives various deputations and leaves in the afternoon for Wellington, vi* Rotorua.
