WONDERFUL DISCOVERY.
ARCHAEOLOGICAL TREASURE. LIGHT ON THE APOSTLES. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received March 9, 7-30 p.m. London, March 8. The Daily Mail’s Rome correspondent states that* Professor Lanciani. the eminent archaeologist, describes the Christian hypogeum, which was recently unearthed at Rome while excavating for a garage, as the most'wonderful archaeological discovery of our time. The find consists of wall paintings of St. Peter pnd St. Paul and other Apostles, which are much older than any other extant. Professor Lanciani declares it is of exceptional interest, because it evidently shows the Apostles as they really were, instead ot in the conventional eapes. The earliest pictorial repreaei> tation of the Apostles previous to this discovery date from the fourth century. These are at least two hundred year* earlier, though some archaeologists believe they were painted in the actual lifetime of the Apostles. The artists display a knowledge of technique previously unsuspected. ' The drapery is good, the pose natural, and the faces full of character. The figures of St. Peter and St. Paul are especially well preserved. —United Service.
