TROUBLE WITH FIREMEN
MAHENO DELAYED AT SYDNEY. AN EARLIER DISPUTE. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received March 9, 8.55 p.m. ■Sydney, March 9. The Maheno, due to sail for Wellington to-day, is hung up owing to a dispute in the engine-room. It is stated trouble was experienced before the vessel left New Zealand and more occurred during the voyage. As a result several stokers have given notice and this was resented by the remainder who also gave notice. The company, being unable to fill the vacancies, decided to reinstate the men, and the engineers thereupon refused to sail if the men were allowed to resume, claiming that they have difficulties in maintaining order in their department with the same stokers.—Aue.-N-Z. Cable Assn.
[The Maheno, which sailed from Auckland for Sydney last Thursday evening, was delayed at the wharf for nearly eight hours owing to a dispute in connection with her stokehold hands. The trouble arose over the discharge of one of the men. This was resented by some of the others, who gave in their notice. Owing to the dispute no men would sign on. The vessel had been scheduled to sail at 11 a.m., but her departure was postponed hour by hour until 5 p.m., when arrangements were made for her departure. It was then found that the vessel was three men short, and it was another hour and a half before the full complement was on board and the vessel left the wharf for sea.]
