MOTOR CAR FATALITY. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright Melbourne, March 8. As the result of two motor cars colliding at Fitzroy Miss Anne Gleeson was killed and three women and a man injured. BREACH OF PIPE CONTRACT. Sydney, March 8.
The agents through whom the Government is supplying pipes to Java state that Australia’s name is mocked and dishonored throughout the East as the result of the manner in which the Government has treated the pipe contract. Until the Government makes the breach good the East will refuse to trade with Australia. A RECORD STRIKE. Sydney, March 9. Three years ago the sewer workers at Manly ceased work in consequence of the Arbitration Court v-’-ying the award. The Australian Workers' Union has uow declared the strike off. The strike is claimed as a record. A PERSISTENT FIRE. Sydney, March 9. The debris from the Pastoralist Finance Association’s fire is still smouldering, and burst into flames yesterday, but was soon extinguished. Intermittent fiyes are exrpected till the debris is cleared. APPOINTMENT FOR MR. GULLETT. Brisbane, March 9. The Government has offered Mr. Gullett, who recently resigned his position as director of immigration for the Commonwealth, an important post as organiser of agriculture. MOUNT LYELL RETRENCHMENT. ' Hobart, March 9. Retrenchment at Mount Lyell comes into operation to-day. Two hundred men will be dismissed. COKE TRADE DISAPPEARING. Sydney, March 9. The coke trade on the South coast is threatened in consequence of coke from other countries underselling Australian coke in American ports. The manager of the coke works at Jeyawarra says that, unless the copt of production is cheapened, the export trade is doomed. MELBOURNE MURDER APPEAL. Melbourne. March 8. The Full Court has fixed next Wednesday for the hearing of Ross’s application for leave to appeal and for the appeal itself. The court has also directed prisoner’s counsel to furnish, not later than the 11th, an affidavit setting out the full grounds of appeal. SHIPPING POLICY. Melbourne, March 9. Mr. Hughes has announced that, owing to union interference with the. management of the Largs Bay, it is impossible for the Government to continue its shipping policy, which will be reconsidered.
