INGLEWOOD SPORTS. A SUCCESSFUL MEETING. (From Our Own Correspondent.) As Thursday, th* ?nd Inst., the day selected for the first meeting under the reincarnated Inglewood Athletic Club, wai; absolute--ly an extreme of untoward weather for such a meeting, so yesterday was the acme of climatic conditions desirable—bright, bracing and balmy—until the last event, when a light rain fell. There was good competition in most of the events, which were run without a hitch, and the 'club and the club’s committee are to be congratulated on the satisfactory result of their efforts, which, it is to be hoped, will give enough spur to the right spirit to ensure a continuance of these meetings. It is known already that financially the club is not a loser, but until all accounts are finally squared the actual position cannot be stated.
The Eltham Brass Band, under Bandmaster Beesley, enlivened the time between events, their efforts being the subject of many complimentary remarks by the people of Inglewood. In this event six competitors started, and all kept together until the last lap but one, when a mishap occurred by which two bicycles were smashed and three competitors put out of the race, but fortunately without serious personal Injury. The result recorded by the officials was: W. J. Sharrock 1, R. Wheeler 2, W. S. Starrock 3. The ladies* nail-driving competition was won by Mrs. Bublitz. Stepping the Chain.—-Men: R. Darlow 1.
