The report called for by thte Government in explanation of the cancellation of the -contract with Java for the supply of cast iron pipes by the Government dockyard at Newcastle, states U would be possible to obtain pipes from the Continent or Great Britain and land them in Java at a smaller price than the present or future condition© appertaining in Australia allow. The report conclude©: Pipes are being landed in New Zealand from England at a much smaller price than that for which it is possible to manufacture thdm in Aus-tralia.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Aesn. BEEF PRICES REDUCED. Received Maron 7, 7.35 p.m. Sydney, March 7. The Profiteering Prevention Court ordered reductions in the retail prices of beef in Sydney ranging from id to ’d per pound. SEAMEN’S WAGES. Received March 7, 10.15 p.m. Sydney, March 7. The Merchant Service Guild has ©ent a letter to the Commonwealth steamship owners stating that under no circumstances will the guild accept a reduction in wages, and it suggests a conference between the owners and the guild.—Aus.-N.Z.
