MYSTERIOUS EXPLOSION.

ON MAIN TRUNK LINE. NO DAMAGE CAUSED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Te Awamutu, March 7. As the Main Trunk Express from Auckland at 11 o’clock last night approached Te Awamutu station a loud explosion startled the neighborhood. The engine at the time was crossing the Mangapiko Stream Bridge, a few hundred yards north of the station yard, and the explosion extinguished the engine lights. The express instantly stopped, but, as no damage was done it was able to proceed on the journey. After a few minutes’ investigation a small mark on one rail on the bridge was found, but otherwise no sign of damage or cause of an explosion. The police are investigating the matter. The explosion was heard three miles away and houses rattled. THEORY OF THE CAUSE. Te Awamutu, Last Night. Police and official inquiry to-day concerning last night’s explosion leads to the theory that the impact with an obstruction on. the rail, which probably fell from the engine itself, caused the steam valves to relax, giving the impression of an explosion. The rail bears an impression for several inches as though a hard substance was dragged on it.
