THE NILE.

SERIOUS WATER SHORTAGE. INSUFFICIENT FOR CROPS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.— Copyright. London, March 5. The Morning Post’s Cairo correspondent says that a grave feature in the situation is the serious water shortage. The Nile is lower than in 1914, which was a. record. Up-river gauges suggest that the water, aided by the Assouan Dam, would suffice for the ordinary summer crops, but there is no surplus for summer rice. As last year’s cotton crop was very small the situation is doubly serious.
