EVERY PENNY IN.

BOROUGH COUNCIL NEW RECORD. The distinction of having collected all rates levied in the last two years is the very satisfactory record of the New Plymouth borough. At last night’s meeting of the council a report made to the general manager (Mi F. T. Bellringer) by the accountant (Mr. E. D. Matthews) was presented. It stated: “I have to report that every penny' of last year’s rates has been collected,, that is to say for the year ending March 3), 1921. You will remember that I was able to report a similar result last year, and 1 think that this should be pleasing to yourself and the council.« I desire to say that thia result has only been achieved after considerable trouble and labor onh the part of the rate clerk and every member of the clerical staff. A glance at the balance-sheets of other local bodies shows, I think, that New Plymouth should be proud of such a satisfactory state of affairs.” The following summary was attached to the report:—Rates struck: 1918-19, £261115 10s lid; 1919-20, £26,442 10s 9d; 1920-21, £31,724 9s 2d; total. £84,282 10s lOd; amount collected, £84,282 10s ]od. The council decided to convey to the ’staff its appreciation of the work accomplished in regard to the rates.
