ONE-MAN TRAMS.
OPERATION IN NEW PLYMOUTH. QUESTION OF EXTENSION. The question of altering the existing tramcara with a view to their adoption for one-man operation wai before the New Plymouth Borough Council last night, as the result of a recent report made by the electrical engineer. When the question was brought up the Mayor suggested that one car which was to undergo overt haul should be altered, and the engineer eouid then report to the council as to the cost before a decision in regard to the others was come to. The alterations which were proposed in respect o£ the small cars only consisted of putting in windows at the ends of the cars and Utting doors. Cr. J. Kibby said the council already had three cars with doors. These had not been a success so fax, and he thought they should be proved before the others were altered. The town had a tramway system that they could and should be proud of, but he thought it would be a step in the wrong direction to start knocking the cars about after six years’ work. At a.ny rate he desired to see the question held over for a full meeting of <,he council. He moved an amendment to this effect. The amendment was seconded by Cr. R. L. Parkin. The Mayor controverted Cr. Kibby’s statement that the cars would be knocked about. In reply to a question by Cr. Kibby the Mayor said the partition at the end of the car which was to be partly cut down was the one behind the motorman, and the alteration was intended to give the man. operating the car a better view of passengers entering or alighting. The amendment on being put wan carried, and the question was tbereford held ovfer.
