V.R.C. MEETING. ROSTRUM WINS THE NEWMARKET, ST. LEGER GOES TO FURIOUS. By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright. Received March 5, 5.5 p.m. Melbourne, March 5. The weather was dull for the opening of the V.R.C. autumn meeting yesterday, and the going was dead. There was a large attendance. Finishing with a good run Stall won the hurdle race brilliantly from Merry Bob. Both torses are owned and trained in Adelaide. Heir Apparent led for six furlongs in the St. Leger Stakes. Then Harvest King made the pace. Furious went to the front at the distance and won brilliantly. Lewis rode his sixth St. Leger winner in this race, and his success was loudly cheered. The favorite, David, ran a bad race in the Essendon Stakes and finished eighth. Stare, who was lying fourth early in the race, led into the straight and won well. Dempsey was cheered for his riding of the winner. Stare is engaged in the Cup. There was great excitement in the Newmarket Handicap. The favorite Rostrum, which was near the rails, was always prominent and won brilliantly. Whizz Bang was a good second, with Lisnavane, who was tte early leader, third. Solfanello held the outside position and was never dangerous. Rostrum ran second last year. He cost the owner, who is also the trainer, Eric Connolly, £750 In June. The rider (Sleight) heads the Melbourne winning jockeys’ list Eurythmic was well up early in the race, but was never dangerous in the last half. Scarlet was sixth early in the Hires’ Produce Stakes, and finishing with a great run, won brilliantly. Results:— PINES HURDLE RACE.—Stall 9.4 1, Merry Bob 11.3 2, Front Rank 9.2 3. Eleven starters. Rostrum led by a length at the distance from Lisnavane, and won by three-quarters of a length from Whizz Bang, Lisnavane being half a length behind third.
