DISASTROUS CYCLONE.

The failure of Beira (Portuguese East Africa) to secure telegraphic communication since last week is explained by the arrival of a runner from Chinde with news of a disastrous cyclone at Chinde on February 24, followed by torrential rains, severing communications and sinking and piling up all river steamers and barges. All storage sheds were wrecked, much cargo was lost and the remainder was damaged, while every building was unroofed and several collapsed. Shipping communication must remain at a standstill for some time. —Times Service. Received March 6, 12.25 a.m. Capetown, March 4. Beira reports that the town of Chinde, on the Portuguese east coast, has been practically wiped out by a cyclone. Only eight houses are left standing. Thousands of bags of sugar were destroyed.
