SCHOOL SHOOTING. MOVE TO STIMULATE INTEREST. GOVERNOR GIVES A TROPHY. 1 - -■ z By Telegraph.—Press Assortsrur.. Christchurch, Last Night Under date February 28 Lord Jellicoe wrote to the Hon. Sir R. H. Rhodes (Minister for Defence) as follows: —“1 learn with regret from the report of the National Rifle Association that New Zealand unite competing in the Imperial Challenge Shield competition miniature rifle shooting for boys of the Empire, did not show results which compared well with those from other* Dominions. I should like to do my best for the encouragement of New Zealand units in future and therefore offer a challenge trophy for award to unit in New Zealand which makes the greatest ail-round effort and shown tHe highest all-round training by entering successfully the largest number of teams in the competitions, taking • into consideration: (a) Quality of the shooting of the various teams representing cadet corps schools or other units; (b) percentage of boys that shoot in the competitions, senior and junior, or both, iia compared with tJ le total number of boys of shooting age in the cadet corpe of a school or other unit. I understand the Governor-Generals of the other Dominions have given a trophy under the same conditions. The trophy i» now on order.”
On Thursday Sir R. H. Rhodes placed His Excellency’s letter beifore a meeting of Cabinet at Wellington and Cabinet expressed its appreciation of Loid Jeliieoe’B generous offer, which it was considered would greatly stimulate interest in shooting among the various units affected.
