DISPOSAL OF WHEAT.
GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE, ft FINANCT a L DIFFICUIdTY. rr ’ ’■ 'zz_r_r.i_ • ” T * A letter was received by the North Canterbury Farmers’ Union from the Minister for Agriculture, Hon. W. Nosworthy, with reference to the union's request that in the event of millers not buying freely when this season's wheat is ready for the market the Government should inaugurate a scheme similar to that which was in operation last year, whereby the wheat was taken over and paid for as soon as the grower delivered to an approved store. The present intention, said the Minister, was to proceed with the export of some of the crop and as the best of the w’heat would be required for that purpose the export should stimulate millers in their buying. However, should there be no export and should millers stop buying after securing sufficient wheat for the first few months grinding, he would consider the matter of taking the wheat from the growers, as was done last year, but at present he could not see where the money was coming from to put such a scheme into operation. He estimated ths amount
required would be about £500,000, of which sum the Government might lose the use for three or four months. It was resolved that a circular letter be sent to all branches in the North Canterbury district asking them to take a vote on the question whether the Government should be asked to fix a minimum price for wheat grown during the ensuing season.
