There was a good attendance at the meeting held last night for the purpose of discussing the raising of £lOOO for improving the grounds of the Technical High School. Mr. Bert Rawles, chairman of the Retailers’ Association, presided. He briefly explained the object of the meeting, and called on Mr. R. Masters, M.P., to address the meeting, Mr. Masters fully explaining the objects and benefits of the scheme. Mr. P. Thomson asked if the objective was £lOOO or £2OOO. There had been mention of a pound for pound subsidy. Mr. Masters said the Department would not now guarantee to pay the subsidy. They would approve payment, but cou’d not guarantee to make payment. Mr. Thomson asked if those behind the scheme were fully satisfied that it wa? the best possible scheme. Personally he would prefer straight-out subscriptions. Mr. Masters said there was no suggestion of lack of public spirit, but people were not able to give the larger sums which had been usual in the past. There was no appeal to the gambling spirit, but there was an appeal to the spirit of curiosity. The chairman said it was hoped to raise the money in three days. At present it was proposed only to provide football, hockey and cricket grounds and tennis courts. Any surplus money could be used in putting some of the rougher ground in order. Nothing could be done to the fences at present. On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr. A. A. Thompson, it was decided to proceed with the scheme, those present pledging themselves to help. GENERAL.
