TECHNICAL COLLEGE.

AN INCREASE OF PUPILS. MEETING OF THE BOARD. A meeting of the Advisory Board of the New Plymouth Technical College was held last night. Present: Messrs. G. H. Dolby (chairman), R. J. Deare, Hugh Baily, R. Scott, F. S. Cobham, J. S. Connett and A. L. Moore (director). Apologies were received from Messrs. Tribe, Reid, C. Carter and P. J. H. White. The chairman welcomed Mr. R. Scott as representative of the Trades and Labor Council. Mr. Scott, in reply, said that he was very interested in all education and would put forth his beet efforts for the progress and welfare of the school. Correspondence was read from the Education Board acknowledging receipt of a letter regarding the formation of a board of managers; also regarding the City and Guilds of London examinations successes, and the Imperial Challenge Shield results. The correspondence was received. Mr. Scott asked whether the pupils attending the school were covered by insurance for accident. The director replied that he did not think so. Mr. Baily moved that the director confer with the secretary of the board regarding insurance for pupils. This was seconded by Mr. Deare and carried. The directors reported that there were 190 pupils attending the school, as against 164 for the opening period of last year. Additional assistance would be required on the staff. Mr. Baily moved, and Mr. Scott seconded, that the Education Board ask the department to provide a full-time science and mathematics teacher on the staff of the school.—Carried. Mr. Connett moved, and Mr. Deare seconded, “that the Advisory Board of the school call the attention of the Borough Council to the necessity of strictly enforcing the by-laws regarding the employment of registered plumbers on salutary work. The relaxing of the stringency of this by-law causes a lack of incentive for apprentices to proceed to their examinations.” The director reported that the school cadet company had won the North Island Weekly Press Challenge Shield. A letter of congratulation will be sent to Mr. Crimp and his team. A discussion took place on the formation of a board of managers, and the following motion was carried: “That the chairman, director and Mr. Baily be empowered to draw up a petition to the Council of Education requesting the formation of a board of managers.” Messrs. Baily and Blackball were appointed a visiting committee for the ensuing month.
