BIRKIE RE-HANDICAPPED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Feb. 27. For the Dannevirke Racing Club’s meeting Birkie has been re-handicapped at 8.12 for the President’s Handicap. THAMES RACES POSTPONED. Thames, Feb. 27. The Thames races are postponed till Wednesday. AN INJURED JOCKEY. Thames, Feb. 27. Maskerry, the jockey who was injured when Delysian fell in the Trial Handicap on Saturday, was operated on yesterday, but is not yet conscious. TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) It was common talk in Wanganui that one big punter lifted about £l5OO off the tote when Ngata won the Cup. Wonder if his hand shook? First Carbine made amends for his defeat in the Wanganui Trotting Cup by easily running off with the Liverpool Handicap on Friday, and paid quite a fair price for a three-horse field. Aureate will be hard to beat in the Dannevirke Cup, and Kikini and Birkie should go well in the open sprint. Sydney buyers paid the 'best prices at the Koatanui yearling sales on Friday, Mr. G. Foulsham (Melbourne) paying 1600 guineas for a brother to Thespian (Absurd —Leta), and Mr. G. Tye (Sydney) purchasing Rational’s brother for 1200 guineas. Mr. J. H. Jeff end got the Absurd —Amyrin colt for 600 guineas, and Mockery’s sister fell to Mr. G. D. Greenwood’s bid at 400 guineas. A bay filly by Absurd from Pennon went to Mr. D. Brennan (Sydney) for 650 guineas. Mr. W. R. Kemball bought the filly by Absurd —Cintra for 350 guineas, and the Absurd —Holyrood filly for 500 guineas. Mr. W. Duncan was content with a filly by Absurd —Graduate (a late foal”) for 100 guineas. In all eight lots brought 54Q0 guineas—an average of 675 guineas apiece. A well known horse-trainer, who had a horse racing at Wanganui, was refused a pass to the bird-cage, the powers that be (for some unaccountable reason) refusing him admission because he did not hold a trainer’s license. Such perfect rot was never heard of before, and the aggrieved party rightly intends going on with the business, and somebody will get a good “shake-up” before the trouble drops.
